New Samsung Odyssey G8 gaming monitor launches with 5K and 27-inch display

Samsung has updated its Odyssey G8 series with a new 27-inch monitor. While expensive, the new Odyssey G8 (G80HF) does not adopt a QD-OLED panel like the older G81SF (curr. $899 on Amazon). Instead, Samsung has equipped the G80HF with an IPS panel that outputs at 5,120 x 2,880 pixels (5K).
By default, the new monitor combines this resolution with a 180 Hz refresh rate. Alternatively, switching to 2.5K (2,560 x 1,440) allows the G80HF to double its refresh rate using Dual Mode technology. The monitor continues to deliver 1 ms GtG response times with AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync support regardless of which refresh rate and resolution combination it uses, though.
Moreover, the G80HF peaks at 350 nits but lacks Mini LED local dimming zones to push beyond that value when viewing HDR content. Samsung equips the monitor with dual HDMI 2.1 ports too, which are joined by a single DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20) connection. The G80HF also finds itself with USB 3.2 Type-A and USB Type-B ports as well, but no USB Type-C connectivity to speak of.
The Odyssey G8 (G80HF) is available to order on Samsung Germany for €709 (~$830). Currently, Samsung hopes to begin shipping pre-orders from May 22. The company has not confirmed when its new 27-inch gaming monitor will be available in other markets yet, though.
