The Ultima 18 tackles the difficult task of downsizing a high-end desktop. With a Core Ultra 9 CPU and available Nvidia RTX 5090 graphics card, the gaming laptop is performance-focused. Shipping with a large 4K display, the 8.8 lb. Ultima is one of the heavier 18-inch models.

Maingear has designed another high-end gaming laptop that promises desktop performance and connectivity. The American manufacturer strives to create durable custom builds for offices and gaming rooms. The Ultima 18 looks to continue that trend, powered by an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and up to an Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU. While on the chunky side, the 18-inch laptop offers a high refresh rate 4K display. The Ultima 18 starts at $3,599, with customization available now on Maingear's site.

Maingear Ultima 18 specs

  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX (24 cores, 5.4GHz Turbo Boost)
  • GPU: Up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile GPU (24GB GDDR7)
  • Display: 18.0” 4K (3840x2400) 200Hz, G-SYNC, 100% DCI-P3, <7ms
  • Memory: Up to 192GB DDR5 (4x48GB)
  • Storage: Up to 4x M.2 SSDs (1x Gen5x4, 3x Gen4x4)
  • Connectivity: 2x Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, 2x 2.5Gb LAN, HDMI 2.1, microSD, 2x USB-A (1x with PD), Bluetooth 5.4
  • Battery: 98WHr, 8-cell Lithium Polymer
  • Weight: 8.8 lbs. (3.99kg)

Buyers may find similarities between the new Maingear laptop and the recently released Razer Blade 18. The notebooks utilize the 24-core Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, which is among the most powerful mobile processors. With a 16:10 aspect ratio, both gaming laptop options also ship with a 4K 3840x2400 resolution screen. However, the Ultima display lacks a dual-mode option and is limited to a 200Hz refresh rate. For competitive gaming, Maingear advertises a modest response time of under 7ms. The 2025 Blade 18 is also somewhat more compact at just over 7 lbs.

The Ultima 18 may not have many rivals when it comes to upgradability. It's the first Maingear laptop to employ dual-channel DDR5 memory, and owners can install up to 192GB of low-latency RAM. The Ultima also has room in its chassis for four M.2 SSDs, with one PCI Express 5.0 slot.

The design of the Maingear notebook exudes industrial qualities with a healthy dose of metal. Gamers may appreciate the keyboard, which features per-key RGB lighting effects that extend to its backside. Unlike some competitors, the Ultima 18 offers rear connectivity that includes dual 2.5Gb LAN ports. Other highlights are a pair of Thunderbolt 5 ports and WiFi 7 support.

With top-end specs and a reinforced shell, the 18-inch laptop checks in at a hefty 8.8 lbs. Battery life may also determine how often the Ultima 18 leaves desktops. Maingear packed a 98WHr lithium polymer battery into the machine. Owners can top up the laptop's power with a downsized 330-watt adapter or through USB-C.

Please keep in mind that Maingear, like Schenker/XMG, Eluktronics and several other brands with the same business model, does not design its laptops on its own; instead, it buys mostly complete systems from OEMs such as Clevo and Tongfang. This means other brands may sell essentially the same laptops as the Ultima albeit with slightly different looks, specifications and prices.
