A huge display, keyboard, trackpad, and powerful hardware: The Huawei MatePad Pro Max has everything you need in a laptop replacement. But is the overall package really enough to get you through a full workday?

A tablet can do a lot, but can it really replace a laptop? With the Huawei MatePad Pro Max, Huawei aims to blur that very line. The 13.2-inch display offers plenty of workspace, while the included keyboard transforms the tablet into a notebook in just a few seconds. The keyboard makes a good impression when typing. The keys feel comfortable to type on and are well-suited for longer texts. The small trackpad makes operation more comfortable and reduces the need to constantly touch the screen. The built-in compartment for the M-Pencil Pro is also handy.

Performance also speaks in favor of this PC replacement. The Kirin 9030 Pro handles everyday tasks swiftly and shows no noticeable lag, even when multitasking. Browsers, documents, emails, and video conferences pose no significant challenges for the tablet. The limitations lie less with the hardware than with the software. Users who need traditional desktop programs will hit limits faster on HarmonyOS than on Windows or macOS. There are also limitations when connecting an external monitor: While the MatePad can output the image, it only supports mirroring the internal display.

For typical office work, however, the concept is surprisingly compelling. Anyone who writes documents, conducts research, edits presentations, or consumes media on the go gets a highly portable work device. Add to that its light weight, it weighs less than a kilo even with the keyboard, and its extremely slim design.

That said, the MatePad Pro Max isn’t a full-fledged laptop. It can replace a computer if your tasks are primarily browser- and app-based. If you need specialized desktop software, multiple external monitors, or maximum flexibility, a traditional notebook is still your best bet.

With the right accessories, the MatePad Pro Max can replace a laptop.
