Waterproof Oukitel RG14-P laptop charges itself using solar power
IFAFirst showcased in March, Oukitel has finally confirmed new details about the RG14-P during IFA. Although the Oukitel RG14-P is primarily marketed for industrial applications, the notebook is technically interesting because nearly the entire surface of the display lid is covered with solar panels. These panels are designed to charge the laptop in the sun at up to 15 watts. According to Oukitel, the 95 Wh battery can thus be charged from 0 to 50 percent in six hours in real-world use.
That should be enough to significantly extend the laptop’s battery life during the day, while in an emergency, even without a power outlet nearby, you’ll only have to wait a few hours before the laptop can be used again. The battery consists of two parts, a built-in 3,000 mAh battery and a 5,200 mAh removable battery, so spare batteries can easily be carried along if desired. However, Oukitel does not provide any details regarding battery life.
Since the manufacturer uses a somewhat outdated 14th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, the battery life is unlikely to quite keep up with more modern competitors featuring Intel Panther Lake. The 14.1-inch touchscreen is designed to remain readable even in direct sunlight thanks to a brightness of 1,000 nits. However, due to the wide screen bezels, the laptop is about the same size as a typical 16-inch notebook – and significantly thicker and heavier.
In fact, the device weighs 3.7 kilograms. On the other hand, the chassis is IP69K-certified and therefore waterproof, and a handle makes it easier to carry. The webcam attaches magnetically to the laptop and can be oriented either forward or backward. The laptop features two 5-watt stereo speakers, an NFC chip, a fingerprint sensor, RS-232, HDMI, and Ethernet. Oukitel has not yet confirmed pricing or availability.
