Asus VivoBook S15 D533UA Review: Ryzen 7 all-rounder with good battery runtimes
Asus offers the VivoBook S15 D533UA, a stylish, slim 15.6-inch all-rounder that is powered by a Ryzen APU. The device is familiar to us. A few months ago, we reviewed the VivoBook S15 S533EQ which is based on a Core i7-1165G7 CPU and a GeForce-MX350 GPU. The competitors include notebooks like the Samsung Galaxy Book NP750XDA the Honor MagicBook 15 the HP Pavilion 15, and the MSI Modern 15 A11M.

Case & equipment - VivoBook without Thunderbolt
Asus relies on a sleek, slim metal case for the S15, which is finished in a dark silver-gray. The back of the lid is available in four colors: Black, Red, Green, White - we have the black model. The S533 does not have any manufacturing flaws. Stability and stiffness are within reason. The lid's maximum opening angle is about 130 degrees. The battery is firmly installed. The innards can be accessed after removing the bottom shell.
The laptop has three USB-A ports (2x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1) and one USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 1). The latter does not support Power Delivery or Displayport via USB-C. Thus, only one video output is available with the HDMI port. The microSD memory card reader (reference card: AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60) is one of the slowest of its kind.
The WLAN chip (Intel AX200) supports the 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards and offers Bluetooth 5 functionality. The data rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the near vicinity, short distance between notebook and server PC; router: Netgear Nighthawk AX12) turn out very good.

Input devices - Asus computer offers key illumination
The keys of the illuminated chiclet keyboard offer a short travel and a clear pressure point. The key resistance could be crisper for our taste. The keyboard yields a bit during typing. It did not prove to be overly annoying. All in all, Asus delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use.
The smooth surface of the multi-touch ClickPad (10.5 x 7.3 cm/~4.1 x 2.9 in) makes it easy for the fingers to glide. It also responds to inputs in the corners. The pad has a short stroke and a clear pressure point.
Display - IPS on board
Brightness (266.8 cd/m²) and contrast (516:1) of the matte 15.6-inch screen (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) do not trigger enthusiasm. We consider values beyond 300 cd/m² or 1,000:1 as good. PWM flickering could not be detected.

The viewing-angle stable IPS panel can be read from any position. Outdoors, reading the screen is only possible in the shade or under cloudy skies due to its low brightness level.
Performance - Ryzen 7 Power
Asus' VivoBook S15 D533UA is a 15.6-inch all-rounder that provides enough performance for office and Internet applications as well as simple computer games.
Test conditions
The notebook has three energy profiles ("Power Mode", "Balanced Mode", "Whisper Mode"), which can be switched between via the key combination "Fn" + "F". We used the profile "Balanced Mode". We also ran some benchmarks with the "Performance Mode" profile active. The results can be found in the comparison diagrams.
Power Mode | Balanced Mode | Fan Mode | |
---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 | 35 Watt | 28 Watt | 20 Watt |
Power Limit 2 | 35 watts | 35 watts | 35 watts |
Processor
The CPU part of the Ryzen-7-5700U-APU (Lucienne) consists of an eight-core processor that operates with a base speed of 1.8 GHz. An increase up to 4.35 GHz is possible via Turbo. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads can be processed per core) is supported.
The multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark is processed with 3.5 GHz for a short time, then the clock drops to 3.1 GHz. The single-thread test is run with 1.4 to 4.35 GHz. In battery mode, the CPU runs at 3.1 GHz (multi-thread) or 1.1 to 4.35 GHz (single-thread).
We check whether the CPU Turbo is used permanently in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes. The Turbo is used on medium level. The "Performance Mode" profile causes the clock to increase slightly.
The CPU delivers a high level of multi-thread performance, but falls short of its capabilities due to a Turbo clock on a medium level.

System performance
The system works nimbly and smoothly. The Ryzen APU provides more than enough computing power for office and Internet applications. Beyond that, it allows using computer games to a limited extent. The working memory (16 GB, DDR4-3200, onboard) runs in dual-channel mode. An expansion of the memory is not possible.

Graphics card
The Vega-8 graphics core supports DirectX 12 and reaches speeds of up to 1,900 MHz. The maximum can be maintained permanently, as the Witcher 3 test shows. The 3DMark results are below average compared to the Vega-8 notebooks we have tested so far. We attribute this to the installed working memory. Since the latter is soldered, there is no potential for improvement.

Gaming performance
The Ryzen APU smoothly brings many of the games in our database to the screen. Most titles are playable at HD resolution (1,280 x 720 pixels) and low to medium quality levels. Games with moderate hardware requirements allow more. Some current games can also be played.
The same behavior as in the 3DMark benchmarks is seen: The working memory slows down the GPU a bit. As a result, it delivers some of the lowest frame rates we have measured so far with the Vega-8 graphics core.

Emissions & Energy Management - Asus Laptop with good battery life
Noise emissions
The device usually does not make a sound when idling and under low load - the fan is inactive. This is over under medium to high load. In both cases, we register a maximum sound pressure level of 45 dB(A). For a lower noise level, we would have to use the energy profile "Whisper mode" - at the expense of computing power.

Temperature
Our stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least one hour) runs the CPU and GPU at 3.1 GHz and approximately 1,050 MHz, respectively. The stress test represents an extreme scenario. We use this test to check whether the system runs stably even under full load.
The Asus computer heats up noticeably, but not excessively. Temperatures in the lower to mid 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) range are registered at some measuring points during the stress test. In everyday use, the rates are in the green zone.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 46.1 °C / 115 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 46.6 °C / 116 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.5 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (32.5 °C / 90.5 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (-4.8 °C / -8.6 F).

Verdict - There's still more
Asus sends a chic, slim 15.6-inch all-rounder into the race for buyers' favor with the VivoBook S15, which has a very low power consumption thanks to its Ryzen-7-5700U APU with a high degree of multi-thread performance. It clearly leaves the Intel-based competition behind. The single-thread performance is the other way around.
The screen is not appropriate for the chic VivoBook S15.
Office and Internet applications as well as simple computer games do not pose a big challenge for the APU. However: The working memory (16 GB, dual-channel mode, onboard) slows down the Vega-8 iGPU a bit. It cannot be changed since the memory cannot be swapped - at least not easily.
Heat and noise development under load should be lower. The screen (FHD, IPS) is disappointing overall. Although it offers stable viewing angles, a matte surface and decent color reproduction, brightness, contrast and color space coverage are too low. An 800 Euro (~$945) notebook has to offer much more here.
The laptop's good battery runtimes support the flagship well. With a WLAN runtime of just under 9 hours, you should be able to get through the day without a power adapter. Unfortunately, the notebook cannot be powered via USB-C since the available slot (USB 3.2 Gen 1) does not support Power Delivery. The last tested Intel sister model offers this option thanks to a Thunderbolt 4 slot.
To prevent misunderstandings: The laptop is called Asus VivoBook S15 D533UA.However, the corresponding model number is S533UA-BQ048T.
