Nvidia GeForce MX330 and MX350 in review: Known architecture - New name
In order to show you the performance of the two new entry-level GPUs, MSI has supplied us with two laptops: The test devices are both MSI Prestige 14 units; a model that we already reviewed with a more powerful graphics card. Basically, both MX300 devices are assembled in the same way. However, there are differences with the CPU used. With the slightly slower Nvidia GeForce MX330, an Intel Core i7-10510U is used, although the Nvidia GeForce MX350 is powered along with an Intel Core i7-10710U. Both GPUs are new and yet old acquaintances in the laptop sector. For example, the Nvidia GeForce MX330 is based on the Nvidia GeForce MX250, and the Nvidia GeForce MX350 is based on an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile. Nevertheless, the memory interface was reduced by 50% with the Nvidia GeForce MX350 - to 64 bits henceforth. Conversely, this recycling also means that the old Pascal architecture with 14 nm is still in use. In terms of pure performance, therefore, not too much should be expected, even if the Nvidia GeForce MX330 has a slightly higher clock rate than the Nvidia GeForce MX250. With the Nvidia GeForce MX350, performance is significantly behind the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile due to the reduced memory interface. At the same time, the GeForce MX350 also has to get by with 25 watts and is therefore much more energy-efficient than a GeForce GTX 1050.

Synthetic benchmarks
The synthetic benchmarks clearly show the trend of the new models. Both new models are consistently superior to their direct predecessors, which was also to be expected. The GeForce MX330 now offers the power of a GeForce MX250, slightly improving performance on the lower-cost devices. Nevertheless, the GeForce MX350 now offers slightly more performance than a GeForce MX250. However, the distance to the almost identically built GeForce GTX 1050 (laptop) is very clear. This is due to the smaller memory interface as well as the lower TPD.

Game benchmarks
We have also tested the performance of the two GPUs with modern games. Top performance shouldn't be expected from the dedicated graphics cards, since these are entry-level GPUs after all, which are used in inexpensive or very compact devices with little cooling. The GeForce MX330 follows the GeForce MX350 with a margin of 29%. In detail, this means that only older games can be enjoyed in Full HD here. Although the GeForce MX350 offers 29% more performance, not many modern games can be displayed smoothly at 1080p here either. The GeForce MX350 clearly loses when directly compared to the GeForce GTX 1050 (laptop). The limitations of the memory bandwidth and the TDP are clearly noticeable here, resulting in a distance between the GeForce MX350 and the GeForce GTX 1050 (laptop) in terms of performance too.

Energy consumption
We checked the energy consumption of the two test devices when idle and under load with an external screen. Only the laptop was considered here, without any other external components. With 8 and 9.5 watts respectively, both devices are relatively energy efficient when idle. However, under load, there are no differences between the two GeForce MX300 models. Both devices require around 50 watts under load. Nonetheless, the difference to the GeForce GTX 1050 (laptop) is quite clear. Compared directly to the GeForce MX230 and the GeForce MX250, our two test devices require a little more power.

Verdict - More performance for compact devices
With the Nvidia GeForce MX330 and the Nvidia GeForce MX350, there's now a little more 3D performance for the entry level. Even very compact devices benefit from the performance, because the energy-efficient components don't require complex cooling constructions.
Looking at the specifications, however, it quickly becomes clear that the supposedly new GPUs are not a completly new development. Both GeForce models are still based on the Pascal architecture, which already has a few years under its belt. Essentially, the Nvidia GeForce MX330 is an Nvidia GeForce MX250. We can also confirm this on the basis of performance. With the Nvidia GeForce MX350, the manufacturer had to take a slightly different path; therefore, the only step left was to base the next faster GPU on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 (laptop) and drastically trim it. Both the memory interface and the maximum power consumption were adjusted, which has an impact on performance too. Nevertheless, the Nvidia GeForce MX350 is up to 30% faster than an Nvidia GeForce MX330.
Compact devices benefit from the performance improvement of the new GeForce models. Unfortunately, however, the more modern Turing architecture is not being used.
The fact that the models tested here are pure entry-level GPUs should be taken into account when making a purchase decision. For pure gaming, both graphics adapters are not recommended for modern titles. Rather, both GPUs can definitely convince in older games and also bring playable frame rates in the native display resolution (1080p) to the screen.
