Honor MagicBook Pro review: Compact 16.1-inch allrounder with a good battery life

With the MagicBook Pro, Honor offers a compact 16.1-inch allrounder that is run by a Core i5-10210U processor and a GeForce MX350 graphics core. Competitors include devices such as the Xiaomi RedmiBook 16 R5, the Asus VivoBook S15 S533EQ, the Schenker Vision 15, the Acer Aspire 5 A515-56, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15IIL05.
Because we already tested a sibling model that shares the identical build, we will not report here in more detail on the case, equipment, input devices, speakers, or the display. You can find the corresponding information in our review of the AMD model of the MagicBook Pro.

Display - IPS onboard
The brightness (317.2 cd/m²) and contrast (1356:1) of the matte 16.1-inch display (FHD, IPS) turn out good and the viewing angles are stable. It offers a great color reproduction already in the state of delivery. At brightness levels of 32% or less, the display shows flickering at a frequency of 25000 Hz.
This is the same panel that is also in the AMD MagicBook Pro. Nonetheless, the measured values are slightly different, but this is normal, since two panels of an identical build are never completely the same.

The display backlight flickers at 25000 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 32 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 25000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8619 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Performance - Honor did not use the most current hardware
With the MagicBook Pro, Honor delivers an allrounder laptop in the 16.1-inch format. The built-in hardware offers more than sufficient performance for office and Internet applications. In addition, it also allows playing computer games to a limited extent.
Test Conditions
The MagicBook Pro offers to power profiles: Performance mode and Standard mode. The Performance mode is only available in mains operation when the battery is charged at least 20%. After each restart of the laptop, Standard mode is automatically activated. Using the "Fn" + "P" key combination, you can change between the modes. We used Performance mode during our testing. The battery tests were run using Standard mode.
Alternatively, you can also change between the profiles using the preinstalled PC Manager software, where the modes are labeled "Performance" and "Balanced."
Processor
The Core i5-10210U quad-core processor (Comet Lake) runs at a basic clock speed of 1.6 GHz. Via Turbo, this can be increased up to 3.9 GHz (four cores) and 4.2 GHz (single core). Hyperthreading (two Threads per core) is supported.
The processor runs through the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark at 3.9 GHz for a short time, before the clock speed drops to between 3.4 and 3.5 GHz. During the single-thread tests it runs at 3.9 to 4.1 GHz. In battery operation, the clock speeds range between 1.8 and 2.6 GHz (multi-thread) and 1.4 to 3.4 GHz (single-thread).
We evaluate whether the CPU Turbo is used constantly in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark for at least 30 minutes in a constant loop. The Turbo operates within a medium clock speed range.

Storage Solution
The MagicBook Pro is equipped with a 512-GB NVMe SSD (M.2 2280) from Kioxia that offers very good transfer rates. Unnecessarily, Honor has partitioned the available storage space into a Windows (119 GB, 76 GB available) and a data partition (337 GB).
While the laptop offers space for a 2.5-inch storage medium, since there is neither the necessary SATA slot nor an included insertion frame, you would be unable to insert the corresponding drive.

Graphics Card
The GeForce MX350 graphics core (Pascal) is based on the GeForce GTX-1050 GPU. However, the graphics memory (GDDR5, 2048 MB) is only connected via 64 Bit instead of a 128-Bit connection. The GPU is a phased-out midrange model whose more powerful successor (GeForce MX450) is already available.
The results in the 3D-Mark benchmarks range at a normal level for the GPU used here. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics-620 GPU is active and the laptop uses Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching solution.

Gaming Performance
The MagicBook Pro brings most games that are in our database smoothly to the screen - in low resolution and at low to medium quality levels. Games with moderate demands allow more, but performance-hungry hits such as "Cyberpunk 2077" and "Assassin´s Creed Valhalla" don't achieve any playable frame rates, even at low resolution and quality settings.
