Following Galaxy Z Fold8: Samsung's compact flip smartphone is also expected to receive a redesign
Our review of the Galaxy Z Flip8 reveals that the Samsung phone has virtually no real competition in the flip-phone segment. The Razr 70 Ultra comes closest to matching the overall package offered by the Galaxy Z Flip8, though the Motorola phone neither features a current flagship SoC nor impresses in terms of its speakers or feature set, especially considering the prices of the flip phones. The price for the Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at around $1,200 (MSRP, available on Amazon.com).
While the Galaxy Z Flip8 is a top-tier device in the flip segment, we believe its elongated design has drawbacks in everyday use. Samsung should therefore consider a wide-format design for the next generation, similar to that of the Huawei Pura X. With the Fold8, Samsung has already successfully taken this step in the foldable category.
Samsung should take cues from its Galaxy Z Fold8 when designing the Flip9
A switch to a “Wide Edition” of the Flip, similar to what Samsung did with the Fold8, would address certain everyday usability issues. Huawei’s Pura series demonstrates just how attractive wider form factors can be in the flip format. Wider screens offer significant advantages for typing, browsing, and watching videos in 16:9 format while also allowing for a thinner body. The nearly square outer panel would also benefit from a “Wide Edition.” A wider Galaxy Z Flip would not only make typing on the on-screen keyboard significantly more comfortable but also allow for a wider, fully featured external display when the device is closed.
The current Galaxy Z Flip8 also suffers from ergonomic issues. Due to the narrow and elongated 21:9 display, the volume buttons and fingerprint sensor shift so far upward when the device is open that they’re barely reachable with one hand even for people with large hands. The battery also remains very small because of the design. A wider body would likely make the buttons more accessible and provide more space to increase the capacity of the 4,300 mAh battery. Given our test data, additional space for improved heat dissipation to prevent processor throttling would also make sense.
Overall, following the success of the Fold8, a “Galaxy Z Flip9 Wide” would be the logical next step.
