It's time for a change.

Can a top-of-the-line smartphone with a 6.9-inch display really be lightweight and easy to handle? Samsung is attempting to strike exactly this balance with the new Galaxy Z Flip8. In our review, we compared this foldable Android phone with its Motorola competitors, the Razr 70 Plus and Razr 70 Ultra—with a clear result.

Conclusion on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8

If you want to own the best flip smartphone, you’ll inevitably have to go with the Galaxy Z Flip8 this year. This is less due to the improvements in the Samsung phone compared to its predecessor—those differences are actually quite modest—and more because there’s a lack of high-end competition from Xiaomi or Oppo. While there are current Razr models from Motorola, they’re in a different league. In our benchmark tests, the Samsung phone is sometimes more than twice as fast, and in our pink-noise measurement, the Flip8 outperforms both the Razr 70 Plus and the Razr 70 Ultra.

Weighing just 180 grams (~6.4 oz) and featuring a 6.1-millimeter-thin (~0.24 in), fairly slim body, Samsung has packed the large 6.9-inch OLED display into a compact package. Even when folded, the Flip8 is now barely thicker than a current flagship phone with a case. The new hinge also ensures that, in everyday use, the display crease is still minimally visible but barely noticeable. 

The 4.1-inch external display significantly enhances usability when the phone is closed, thanks to new software features. With the “MultiStar” expansion module, users aren’t limited to system apps; they can also use Google Maps for navigation or Chrome to quickly check their favorite websites, for example. 

But even the 8th generation shows several weaknesses in everyday use that Samsung urgently needs to address. The battery is once again on the small side, and the charging speed remains slow at 25 watts—even last year’s Mix Flip 2 does a significantly better job here. Due to the flip design, the volume buttons and fingerprint sensor are positioned very high on the body and are difficult or nearly impossible to reach with one hand when the device is open. The lack of dust resistance is also suboptimal for everyday use. 

For the next generation of Flip phones, we’d like to see a Wide Edition, similar to what Samsung introduced this year with its Fold series. Additionally, Samsung should equip its OLED panels with high-frequency PWM dimming; our measurements show a frequency of just 481 Hz.

The Flip8 is not only lightweight and, with a width of less than 76 millimeters (~3 inches), quite slim and compact, but it also feels high-quality in the hands. The new hinge isn’t quite as stiff as the one on the Fold8 Ultra, but this small flip phone can still be used at a wide range of angles. 

Even though the body has become slightly slimmer, with its IP48 certification, the flip phone is still not fully protected against dust. The crease in the middle of the OLED screen is visible, but it’s practically imperceptible in everyday use.

Communication and Usability - Compact Android Phone with WiFi 7 and 5G

The successor to the Flip7, equipped with Wi-Fi 7 and the fast 6-GHz band, achieved high and stable performance in our tests. There’s nothing to complain about when it comes to supported frequencies or voice quality either.  

However, there are both pros and cons when it comes to usability. While the fingerprint sensor works very well and quickly in everyday use, its high placement makes it difficult to reach. The same applies to the volume control button.

Cameras - Galaxy Phone with 50 megapixels and optical image stabilization

Anyone who enjoys taking selfies with a smartphone will be hard-pressed to find a better compact phone than Samsung’s Flip8, thanks to its small front-facing OLED screen. Unfortunately, however, there has been little improvement in the cameras overall, so hardware development has largely stagnated since the Flip6.  

The Flip8’s main camera, which is also used in the Galaxy S26, takes good to very good photos in daylight. In low light, the Flip8 quickly loses sharpness; this is where the relatively small sensor has a negative impact. Since there’s no telephoto lens, the 50-megapixel camera must also handle zooming, resulting in very modest image quality beyond 2x sensor cropping.

Display - Large OLED screen with a low PWM dimming frequency

The 6.9-inch foldable OLED panel is carried over unchanged from the Flip7. Given the lack of competition in the flip phone category this year, however, the panel is still top-tier, even if the color reproduction could be a bit more accurate compared to the Razr 70 Plus. Sticking with the 1,085p resolution is also less than ideal for a premium phone.

For some users, however, the lack of improvements in high-frequency PWM dimming is likely a more serious issue in everyday use. Samsung continues to use a low frequency of just 480 Hz to control screen brightness. Using Rigol software, we also measured a base frequency of about 240 Hz.

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Performance, Emissions, and Battery Life—Fast Samsung Chip with 12 GB of RAM and Great Performance

The successor to the Galaxy Z Flip7 once again features a Samsung chip. The Exynos 2600 delivers high scores in our benchmarks but is slightly slower than in the Galaxy S26+. Especially in graphics tests, the Xclipse 960 delivers significantly more power than last year’s GPU.

Unfortunately, there’s been no progress when it comes to the battery. At 4,300 mAh, the capacity is still low, and the charging speed—at 25 watts—is slow, requiring the device to remain connected to the charger for nearly 1.5 hours.
