While the focus is on the Project Helix console, Microsoft continues to develop other hardware. The unannounced Xbox Elite Series 3 controller has resurfaced after earlier leaks exposed the accessory. A gamer bought what is likely a prototype, revealing some surprising additions, such as an LCD screen.

On Reddit, ssuberlex claims that he purchased the Xbox controller from the OfferUp C2C marketplace. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to connect the peripheral to an Xbox console or PC, wired or wirelessly. Nevertheless, the post provides one of the most complete looks at the Elite Series 2 successor yet.

Mysterious mouse-inspired features

Microsoft didn’t radically change the design of its pro-grade gear. Still, the dual bottom-mounted scroll wheels that leaked from a Brazilian regulator in May are present. It’s a mystery what these inputs are for, but they could be an asset in flight simulators or make adjusting volume convenient.

Just as surprising is an LCD display on top of the Xbox controller, next to the pairing button. With the Elite Series 3 expected to connect to more sources, the screen would aid pairing. It’s rumored to use a Wi-Fi radio to communicate with cloud gaming servers.

The replaceable battery debate

Another noteworthy revision is the move to a removable, rechargeable battery. Ssuberlex shows off the battery compartment and confirms a capacity of 1,528 mAh. At a higher 2,050 mAh capacity, its predecessor may boast superior playtime. Even so, if the component needs replacing, owners have to disassemble the device.

Having paid $200 for the rare find, the gamer is hesitant to conduct a teardown. Redditors are asking whether the manufacturer transitioned to TMR or Hall effect thumbsticks. Stick drift was a common complaint with the Series 2. Durability is a drawback among Amazon customers, prompting some buyers to opt for cheaper third-party alternatives.

Without insiders predicting a release date, the Xbox Elite Series 3 may see further revisions. Microsoft is also rumored to have other new Xbox controllers in the works, including a cloud-gaming-specific option.
