Verdict: The most affordable Zen5 ThinkPad is great!
This may be the moment when the ThinkPad L series steps out of the shadows of its more expensive cousins: The Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD is the most affordable ThinkPad model with AMD Zen5 CPUs in the form of Krackan Point, bringing huge gains in CPU performance compared to older L series models that were limited to Zen3+ CPUs. At the same time, this 14-inch laptop offers a bright screen, great input devices, many business features as well as excellent repairability and upgradeability - 1 TB SSD storage and 32 GB RAM are already present in our €1,250 configuration, and with SO-DIMM slots, it is possible to upgrade the laptop even more in the future.
Of course, being billed as an affordable business laptop, there are weaknesses. The biggest one is that the color gamut of the screen is lacking, but also, the battery life is just average. Certainly, the materials used for the chassis are also not the most premium, and there is no 4G option, just 5G. However, if you just look for a solid laptop to get work done, the ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD is a device that can get you through the next years without breaking the bank.

- Potential Competitors in Comparison
When it comes to the Lenovo ThinkPad line of business laptops, the ThinkPad L series flies a bit under the radar - at least when it comes to the consumer market. When it comes to the enterprise, this line is one of great importance, as it is the most affordable series of enterprise ready ThinkPads. No wonder that Lenovo has improved it a lot over the years - the latest Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6, the most popular 14-inch model of the line, is not that far from a T series in terms of features anymore. Lets see, if the AMD version of the L14 can keep up with the competition in early 2026.
Specifications: Zen5 for the first time in the ThinkPad L series
Case: Basic black plastic ThinkPad design
If you were to describe the ThinkPad L series design with one word, it would be "utilitarian". The all-black ThinkPad has little to offer in terms of visual or haptic flair, apart from a few sprinkles of red here and there. Instead, it offers a rather thick plastic chassis, with rough plastic used for the bottom cover and screen bezel - the palmrest and lid use a smooth coating. Despite the lower end materials, stability is good and not far behind the more expensive ThinkPad T14. One disadvantage: Fingerprints show rather fast. At least they are not hard to clean.
Lenovo uses the same metal hinges as on said ThinkPad T14. They enable an opening angle of 180 degrees and there is little in terms of wobbling, but it is not possible to open the lid with one hand.
The comparable 14-inch business laptops all range in a similar weight class, only the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 is noticeably more lightweight. Also, the ThinkPad L14 G6 is the thickest laptop in this comparison.
Connectivity: Now with Thunderbolt 4
While the physical ports stay the same compared with the Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 5, there is a change: The L14 G6 has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, whereas the predecessor had a single USB4 and one USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. It is a nice change that makes the L series even more flexible and puts it on equal footing with the T series when it comes to the capabilities of the USB-C ports. Even better than the T series: There are three USB-A ports instead of just two. While that is great, it is a shame that the third USB-A is just a USB 2.0 port.
Communication
As with other AMD ThinkPad laptops, Lenovo uses a Mediatek Wi-Fi solution. It is a modern Wi-Fi 7 card that also supports Bluetooth 5.4, and it delivers strong results in terms of transfer rates.
Antennas, M.2 slot and a nanoSIM slot: The ThinkPad laptop has everything it needs for a 4G connection, except for the needed modem. 5G is not available, which is one of the notable differences to the more expensive ThinkPad T14. At the same time, the cheaper E14 does not have 4G or 5G.
Webcam
The 5 Mpix webcam of the Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 produces useable pictures for video calling, nothing more, nothing less.

Security
As mentioned, the ThinkPad L14 is the most affordable models with the full business-laptop feature set. This means it includes a Smartcard reader, a Fingerprint scanner, Kensington Lock slot, as well as a camera shutter for privacy and an IR webcam.
Accessories
There are no accessories included, besides the 65 W USB-C charger.
Maintenance
Getting into the ThinkPad L14 G6 is not difficult. Ten captive Phillips head screws hold the back-cover of the ThinkPad laptop, as well as some clips around the edges.
Once the cover is removed, most components are easily replaceable. This includes the battery, the fan, the M.2 2280 SSD and the two SO-DIMM slots, which are hidden under a plastic flap. There also is an open M.2 2242 slot for a 4G/LTE card. Very nice: The right side ports are on a daughterboard and thus easily repairable. Less good is the fact that the ports on the left are soldered, as are the Wi-Fi card and the CPU.
Also easily replaceable: The keyboard. It only takes two screws that are located on the bottom cover. After they are loosened, the keyboard can be slid back and once the two ribbon cables are disconnected, removed.
Sustainability
Since its very inception in 2010, Lenovo has marketed the ThinkPad L series as "green". The new ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 is no exception to this. The packaging is completely recycleable, and the ThinkPad uses large amounts of recycled materials for the chassis. Lenovo publishes the CO2 emissions (179 kg CO2/equivalent) for the production of the laptop, and there are repair manuals in text and videos, as well as replacement parts available for everyone.
Warranty
Different from the more expensive T series, the ThinkPad L series is sold with just 12 months of manufacturer warranty. It is a basic bring in service. An extended warranty, both in scope and length, is available as a paid upgrade. As this is a business device, the warranty also applies internationally.
Input Devices: Strong ThinkPad tradition continues
Keyboard
Lenovo uses the same full-size Chiclet keyboard with a two stage backlight as in the more expensive ThinkPad T series. It provides 1.5 mm of key travel, less than older ThinkPads, but still enough to make this a very comfortable and easy to use input device. This specific keybard was made by the parts supplier Sunrex, and it is a bit softer than other ThinkPad keyboards.
The layout is identical to most 14-inch ThinkPad laptops, and that is a good thing. The keys are well sized, including the arrow keys, and the F keys are grouped - plus, there are dedicated navigation buttons, like Home/End and PgUp/Down.
Touchpad
The touchpad and TrackPoint pointing stick are identical to the one used in the ThinkPad T14. It is a plastic touchpad that measures 11.5 x 6 cm with an integrated mechanical click - clicking is only possible in the lower half of the touchpad. The touchpad is smooth and works well. Equally as well works the ThinkPad TrackPoint, which is even more precise and it has dedicated mouse keys.
Display: Bright screen, but weak colors
Since the L series is a budget series, the screen selection is more limited than for other ThinkPad series. All screens in the ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD are 14-inch 16:10 IPS screens with a WUXGA resolution (1,920 x 1,200):
- WUXGA, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, Touch
- WUXGA, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
This basic WUXGA screen is usable for basic office tasks, but it also offers a very decent brightness of 423 cd/m², better than most other systems in the comparison.

* ... smaller is better
Colors are definitely a weakness of the screen, as color accuracy is low. Also, the the color accuracy can not really be improved with a calibration. This is no wonder, since the color gamut coverage of this panel is also bad, it just covers 57.4 percent of the sRGB color gamut. The screen of the Lenovo ThinkPad laptop is definitely not suited for photo editing.

Performance: Krackan Point does great in the ThinkPad L14 G6
The Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD is available with both Zen4-based Hawk Point (Ryzen 3 Pro 210, Ryzen 5 Pro 215, Ryzen 5 Pro 230, Ryzen 7 Pro 250) and Zen5-based Krackan Point (Ryzen AI 5 Pro 340, Ryzen AI 7 Pro 350) CPUs. Accordingly, the iGPU used also depends on the processor (Radeon 740M, Radeon 760M, Radeon 780M for Hawk Point, Radeon 840M or Radeon 860M for Krackan Point).
In terms of memory, Lenovo uses DDR5-5600 RAM, with two SO-DIMM slots and up to 64 GB. There is a single M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 slot, with 2 TB as the maximum capacity.
Testing Conditions
As usual with ThinkPads, Lenovo relies on the Windows power settings to set the different power modes. The power modes set the power limits (PL1 = CPU power consumption under sustained load, PL2 = maximum power consumption)
- Best Power Efficiency: PL1 10 W / PL2 30 W
- Balanced: PL1 25 W / PL2 35 W
- Best Performance: PL1 33 W / 43 W
We used "Best Performance" for all our benchmarks.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 350 is the top of the line model of the "Krackan Point" lineup. It has a total of eight cores, four Zen5 and four Zen5c cores with a maximum clock rate of 5 GHz. Further benchmark comparisons are possible with the Notebookcheck CPU comparison list.
Processor performance is excellent. The ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 performs above average for this CPU, and it is able to keep the performance up, even under load. The comparison with the ThinkPad L14 Gen 5 AMD is not fair, since that machine had a Ryzen 5 CPU, so the L14 G6 easily outperforms it by roughly 50 percent.
There is no CPU throttling in battery mode.

Storage Devices
The 1 TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2-2280-SSD of the Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD is not the fastest, but its overall speed is more than good enough for everyday use. Plus, there is no throttling, despite the fact that Lenovo does not use a copper heatpipe for the drive.

GPU Performance
The GPU performance of the integrated AMD Radeon 860M is very clearly not the strongest suit of the Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 6 AMD. Performance is good enough for basic tasks and old games are playable, but this is not a laptop you want to use for graphics-intensive applications. Intel's Lunar Lake is a better choice in this area.

Speakers
Lenovo places the stereo speakers below the front edge of the laptop. The two small speakers are actually better than expected for a budget business laptop and suitable for listening to music, since they even offer a limited amount of bass.
