Verdict - Surface Laptop Ultra is a bit disappointing
Microsoft's new Surface Laptop Ultra is supposed to be an over-engineered flagship laptop with no compromises. However, after our review, we have to say there are a few compromises and we are not sure the priorities are correct for the target audience. You obviously get Nvidia's new RTX Spark N1X SoC and the performance is good as well as stable, both under sustained workloads and battery power. You can get up to 128 GB RAM if you want to run local AI models and you get a super bright Mini-LED panel with more than 2000 nits peak brightness and accurate colors. And obviously you get a magnetic USB-C connector that Microsoft is very proud of.
The problem, however, is the bad implementation of the Mini-LED panel. First of all, it is a slow IPS panel (Mini-LED is the combination of an IPS screen with Mini-LED backlight) with sluggish response times, which results in visible ghosting even in combination with the 120 Hz refresh rate. Secondly, there is no local dimming. This means the whole panel simply acts like an IPS screen with increased black values, so black contents look washed-out. Compared to a good Mini-LED panel (MacBook Pro 16, for example) or high-end OLED panels (ProArt P16), this panel affects the whole user experience.
There are other disappointing aspects as well, like the lack of SD-Express support or that you are limited to one SSD slot. The chassis also feels pretty heavy and thick compared to the larger ProArt P16. Even though the build quality and stability are excellent, the hinges are also quite wobbly. All in all, the Surface Laptop Ultra is a bit disappointing, especially considering the high price.

Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices

Microsoft uses a metal chassis in dark gray (or silver for the base model) that offers premium build quality as well as excellent stability, both for the base unit as well as the lid. The darker version is not very susceptible to fingerprints and also very easy to clean. However, we are not sure about the overall design. While the base unit looks pretty slim at first glance, there is another layer beneath that with a slightly smaller footprint. Combined with the weight of 2 kg, the Surface Laptop Ultra feels much bulkier and heavier compared to the 16-inch Asus ProArt P16, for example. The hinges are also a bit too wobbly and it is not easy to open the lid since there is no indentation in the base unit. Maintenance options are limited to the fans, the battery as well as the single M.2-2280 SSD. The backlit keyboard is very comfortable overall, but would benefit from slightly longer travel. The haptic trackpad works very well.
In terms of connectivity, Microsoft is very proud of its magnetic USB-C charger on the right side, but once again we are not happy with the execution. Yes, it works, but only on the USB-C port on the right (the connector itself has a different shape) and while you can change the orientation, it will block the USB-A port. The SD-card reader offers decent transfer rates, but unfortunately does not support SD-Express. The Wi-Fi 7 module offers fast transfer rates and the 1080p MP webcam takes decent pictures.

Display - Bright, but no local dimming
Microsoft uses a Mini-LED touchscreen and the image quality is a problem. The image is clear and colors are rich, but we did not find a way to activate local dimming. This means it behaves like a regular IPS panel and the black value of 0.61 is very high, which obviously affects the contrast. The other major issue is ghosting (even in 120 Hz mode), which is very noticeable due to slow response times. There is also flickering of the Mini-LED backlight.
The only real highlight is the brightness. Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software shows peak SDR brightness of more than 1,000 nits (which is only matched by the MacBook Pro with activated ambient light sensor & the Yoga Pro) and peak HDR brightness of more than 2,000 nits. Microsoft offers accurate color profiles for P3 as well as sRGB. Overall, rivaling OLED panels as well as the Mini-LED panel of the MacBook Pro offer superior image quality.

Processor Performance
The processor performance of the new Nvidia RTX Spark N1X (20-core) is similar to the Asus ProArt P16 and better than Intel's Panther Lake models as well as AMD's Zen 5 chips. Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max CPUs, however, are significantly faster. Performance is stable under sustained workloads and on battery power. Please see our comprehensive analysis article for more performance and efficiency tests for the new RTX Spark N1X CPUs. System and Storage Devices
System performance is excellent and the Surface Laptop Ultra is a very responsive system. We did not notice any stability issues, either, which is good for a completely new chip generation. There can still be compatibility issues due to the ARM version of Windows, but we have to commend Microsoft here, because they mention this issue in the official specs. Our review unit is equipped with a 1 TB PCIe 5.0 SSD from SK hynix. Some benchmarks report low results, but DiskSpeed measured more than 14 GB/s and this performance can be sustained.

GPU and Gaming Performance
GPU performance is very similar to the GeForce RTX 5070, but as we have seen in our review of the Asus ProArt P16, the RTX Spark GPU benefits from unified memory and can even handle Ray Tracing or Path Tracing, which would even be a challenge for a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. For more AI and content creator benchmarks, please see our RTX Spark N1X analysis.
In terms of gaming performance, you have to keep in mind that most titles have to be emulated, which costs performance, and some games are just not compatible right now, including Call of Duty, Battlefield 6 or F1 25, for example. We expect the situation will improve pretty soon, though. We also faced performance issues with GTA V on the Surface Laptop Ultra, which was not the case on the ProArt P16.

System Noise
The Surface Laptop Ultra is usually a very quiet or even silent system while idling and during light workloads. The thicker chassis construction also improves the fan noise compared to the slimmer Asus ProArt P16, for example, because the maximum fan noise is about 5 dB(A) quieter at up to 46 dB(A). However, after the load phase is over, the fans keep spinning at around 36 dB(A) for a couple of minutes, which is a bit annoying. It also takes a long time before they turn off again. We did not notice any other electronic noises.

Temperature
The chassis stays very cool under light workloads and the surface temperatures are not critical under maximum load, either. The center of the keyboard area can warm up noticeably, but typing is still possible and up to 45 °C at the rear of the bottom panel is no problem, either.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.2 °C / 117 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.9 °C / 113 F, compared to the average of 39.1 °C / 102 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.7 °C / 80 F, compared to the device average of 31.3 °C / 88 F.
(-) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 38.3 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 31.3 °C / 88 F for the class Multimedia.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (32.3 °C / 90.1 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.7 °C / 83.7 F (-3.6 °C / -6.4 F).

Power Consumption and Battery Life
The bright Mini-LED panel increases the maximum idle consumption to around 24 Watts in SDR mode. The maximum power consumption was 145 Watts during the stress test, which quickly settled at around 130 Watts, so the 140W adapter is sufficient (battery was not used).
Battery runtime (92 Wh) is not great with 10.5 hours in our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits and only 4.5 hours at full SDR brightness. We also tested the Wi-Fi runtime at a more reasonable value of 500 nits, which resulted in little more than 7 hours.
