Nvidia has denied discontinuing the RTX 5090, but multiple reports have stated otherwise. It now looks like even the RTX 5080 is being discontinued, only to be replaced by an upgraded and more expensive model.

A couple of weeks ago, we saw reports of Nvidia winding down production of the RTX 5090, and since then, we’ve also heard the same for the RTX 5080. However, the RTX 5080 will not just be cancelled; the 16 GB VRAM variant that’s currently on the shelves is expected to be replaced by a 24 GB VRAM variant. Now, prolific leaker Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) has backed these claims, along with the purported timeline.

In the latest Broken Silicon podcast episode on YouTube, MLID shared a quote from one of his oldest sources, who claimed there are discontinuation dates for both the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. Nvidia will stop production in the first half of January next year. It adds that the final shipments for RTX 5090 cards arrived in September, while the final shipments for the RTX 5080 cards will arrive by the end of October.

This final shipment will be sold through Thanksgiving till its replaced by the 24 GB variant in early 2027. The source, who is a major retailer according to MLID, also mentioned that their system has a placeholder SKU for the RTX 5080 24 GB. Notably, Nvidia has denied discontinuing the RTX 5090 and shared no information on an upgraded RTX 5080. If the 24 GB variant of the RTX 5080 does arrive early next year, it will of course be more expensive.

MLID also points out that if the ongoing AI boom wasn’t a thing, the fact that Nvidia’s top two GPUs were discontinued and the RTX Super series was cancelled would be indicative of the RTX 60 series coming next year, particularly the RTX 6090.

In his previous posts and the latest one, MLID has maintained that the next generation of RTX GPUs is closer than anticipated, even though several other reports have claimed a 2028 or 2029 launch. Recently, leaker Kepler_L2 mentioned that the RTX 6060 will likely not launch till 2029, meaning the RTX 6080/RTX 6090 could arrive sooner than that, possibly in 2028. The same leaker also mentioned last month that the RTX 60 series, as well as AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs, will launch in 2028.
