GPD Pocket 4 Ryzen AI 9 handheld PC review: Small, fast, and oh so adorable
More powerful than most laptops.
The convertible Pocket 4 crams in the performance and features of a full-fledged laptop onto a compact 8.8-inch form factor with only few compromises. The AMD processor in particular helps it run faster than most mini PCs, gaming handhelds, and even traditional laptops.Allen Ngo 👁 Published 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 ...
Verdict — A real laptop replacement with just a few compromises
The GPD Pocket 4 successfully integrates the performance and features of a traditional laptop in a significantly smaller form factor. It improves upon nearly all aspects of the Pocket 3 especially when it comes to display quality and performance to be fit for office work, docking, traveling, and even light-to-moderate graphics editing and gaming provided that you have an external mouse and keyboard. We're impressed by how much the model can offer and how well it excels in many aspects considering its compact size.
Of course, the small size carries innate and unavoidable drawbacks. Most notably, the typing experience is cramped, battery life is just average, and performance is a few notches slower than other PCs with the exact same Ryzen AI 9 processor. Such downsides probably can't be helped, but others like the high-pitched fan noise when running demanding loads, lack of a webcam shutter, and the absence of both VRR and FreeSync should be addressed for a better user experience. An included active stylus would have also made tablet mode much more desirable to use.

The GPD Pocket 4 succeeds the three-year old Pocket 3 by introducing updated hardware features and the latest AMD Ryzen AI Zen 5 processor option. It is essentially an 8.8-inch UMPC that aims to integrate the same features and performance of a full-size laptop.
Our test unit is the highest-end SKU with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU, Radeon 890M GPU, and 32 GB of LPDDR5x 7500 MT/s RAM for approximately $1300 USD. Lesser SKUs may come with the Ryzen AI 9 365 or Ryzen 7 8840U instead with slower Radeon 880M and 780M graphics, respectively. The 1600p144 touchscreen is fixed across all options.
Alternatives to the Pocket 4 include other high-performance or gaming-centric handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally X, Ayaneo Flip KB, or MSI Claw.

Specifications
Case
The chassis is slightly larger and heavier than the Pocket 3 to accommodate the increase in screen size (8.0 to 8.8-inches). Its overall design is also flatter along the edges and corners to be reminiscent of a Nintendo DS Lite. The body otherwise consists of the same aluminum alloy material as before for a similar level of quality and impression.
Connectivity
There are fewer USB-A ports this time around when compared to the Pocket 3. In return, the Pocket 4 gets an additional USB-C port which is arguably preferable for its increased versatility over USB-A. Note that only one of the two USB-C ports supports USB4 devices.

Webcam
The 5 MP webcam is along the left edge of the screen for a tilted angle when compared to virtually most other laptops. There is no privacy shutter or IR support.

Maintenance
Sustainability
The manufacturer makes no mention of recycled materials used during manufacturing. The packaging itself is mostly cardboard with some protective plastic wrapping.
Accessories And Warranty
Optional accessories include expansion modules like the MicroSD card reader, KVM, RS232, or 4G LTE all of which must be screwed into place along the rear. A stylus or carrying case would have been nice to see.
The standard one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices
Keyboard
The keyboard is an almost 1:1 match to the keyboard on the Pocket 3 including even the key sizes and secondary functions. Curiously, the Caps Lock key has no LED indicator this time for reasons unknown.
Touchpad
The touchpad is the same size as before at 6.3 x 3.3 cm. While it works reliably for cursor control, the actual mouse buttons are on the other side of the unit and so both hands are required to use the mouse effectively. You're better off using the touchscreen for most inputs if an external mouse is not available.
Display
The 1440p 144 Hz IPS touchscreen is a significant upgrade from the Pocket 3. Not only are both resolution and refresh rate higher, but color coverage, response times, and brightness are all noticeably higher as well for a truly noticeable difference. The small size and high PPI also help in making the 2.5K display look very sharp like a 4K screen.
A key downside to the display is its lack of FreeSync, Windows VRR, and HDR support which would have reduced screen tearing, increased battery life, and improved image quality, respectively. OLED would have also been nice to see, but the manufacturer likely wrote this off due to battery life concerns.

Performance
Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below. We also set the BIOS to its default settings with any overclocking features set to Auto.
Note that the hotkey to toggle between Low Fan and High Fan modes is tied to the "Plus" key.
Processor
Our Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 performs roughly 15 to 20 percent slower than the average laptop in our database with the same processor. The Asus TUF Gaming A14, for example, offers roughly 35 percent faster multi-thread performance with the same Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. This is because the CPU in our Pocket 4 targets lower TGP values as our Stress Test section below will show.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 2.4 GHz and 28 W when initiating Prime95 stress before falling just slightly to 2.2 GHz and 25 W after a few minutes. In comparison, larger laptops with the same processor like the Asus TUF Gaming A14 can reach and sustain much higher TGP values.
The GPU would stabilize at 2112 MHz and 62 C when running Cyberpunk 2077 with Turbo Fan active. If Turbo Fan is disabled, clock rates would drop slightly to 1850 MHz while core temperature would become slightly warmer at around 67 C. If fan noise is a concern when gaming, then disabling Turbo Fan may be preferable as it is not expected to impact gaming performance by significant margins.

Storage Devices
Our test unit ships with the Kioxia KXG70ZNV1T02 M.2 PCIe4 x4 NVMe SSD supporting transfer rates of over 6800 MB/s. Unfortunately, this rate is unsustainable after about a minute of stress as our DiskSpd loop test results show below where performance would crater to around 2900 MB/s. The Pocket 4 design does not support an SSD heat spreader which would have likely improved performance sustainability.

GPU Performance
3DMark results are about 5 to 10 percent slower than the average PC in our database with the same integrated Radeon 890M graphics. Raw graphics performance is therefore quite close to the Radeon 780M or competing Arc 8 commonly found on the latest traditional laptops.
Interestingly, running on Low Fan mode instead of High Fan mode impacts performance only very slightly according to our Fire Strike results table below. Performance is thankfully not artificially reduced if running on battery power, either.

Gaming Performance
Average performance when running games is roughly 5 to 15 percent faster than the Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. It's also faster than the Arc 8 or Radeon 780M by wider margins than was suggested by the 3DMark results above likely due to the newer architecture and faster RAM. Although we don't recommend aiming for a native 1600p resolution, demanding games like Baldur's Gate 3 can still run fairly well at 1200p and low settings.

System Noise
The internal fan pulses frequently in response to changing loads and so it is almost always active and noticeable. Fan noise can reach 31 dB(A) when running undemanding loads like browsers or video playback or up to 45 dB(A) when gaming. The system is louder than the Pocket 3 while being about the same as the Asus ROG Ally.
If Turbo Fan is disabled, then fan noise when gaming would hover around 38 dB(A) instead of 45 dB(A).
The fan in our test unit would exhibit noticeable whirring as demonstrated by the 1K Hz frequency spike in our noise graph below. We're unsure if this is purposeful for the model or a unique issue on our specific unit.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are surprisingly reasonable despite the high-performance CPU and small form factor. Hot spots reach about 36 C on both the keyboard and bottom surfaces compared to over 40 C on the outgoing Pocket 3. However, the below average CPU performance as mentioned above may be attributing to the lower-than-expected surface temperatures.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 33.8 °C / 93 F, compared to the average of 38.4 °C / 101 F, ranging from 26.6 to 55 °C for the class Handheld / UMPC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 35.2 °C / 95 F, compared to the average of 38 °C / 100 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.1 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 31.6 °C / 89 F.
(+) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 30.7 °C / 87 F, compared to the average of 31.6 °C / 89 F for the class Handheld / UMPC.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 30 °C / 86 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 30.5 °C / 86.9 F (+0.5 °C / 0.9 F).

Energy Management
Power Consumption
The system consumes about 20 percent more power than the Win 4 handheld when running demanding loads like Prime95 or games. However, the boost in CPU and GPU performance over the Ryzen 7 6800U is roughly 60 percent and 25 to 50 percent, respectively, for increased performance-per-watt despite the more demanding hardware.
We're able to record a maximum draw of 57 W from the small (~6.6 x 6.6 x 2.9 cm) USB-C AC adapter when the CPU is at 100 percent utilization. The high overhead allows for powering additional USB devices and decent charging rates if gaming simultaneously.
