The R36H is a new entry in the gaming handheld market. In absolute terms, the model is very limited when it comes to performance, meaning it more suitable for emulating retro games, such as those from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation One and PlayStation Portable. As is often the case with portable retro consoles, the R36H runs a highly modified version of Linux, featuring an attractive user interface. The device also supports ArkOS.
Powering the system is a Rockchip RK3566 SoC with four Cortex-A53 cores running at up to 1.8 GHz. There are two separate memory card slots available: The first card is usually allocated for installing the operating system, whilst a second card can be used for additional game storage. Retro games are generally easy to find on the Internet, but downloading them might prove iffy from a copyright standpoint.
The R36H is equipped with all the essential input options, including two analogue sticks, a D-pad, action buttons, and a total of four shoulder buttons. The 3.5-inch display has a resolution of 640 x 480, resulting in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Rechargeable via a USB-C port, the replaceable 3,000 mAh battery promises to deliver up to 5 hours of use. The handheld also features a second USB-C port, which supports OTG. The device is currently available as a direct import for around $35, heavily discounted from the recommended price of $95. However, you may have to factor in shipping costs as well as any potential taxes and duties.
