GPD Win Mini Zen 4 handheld review: Solid alternative to the Asus ROG Ally

The Win Mini is the latest PC gaming handheld from GPD who has been specializing in the category long before Valve and Asus popularized the concept. The latest model follows on the footsteps of the Pocket 3 and Win Max 2 with yet another brand new design and the newest AI-ready Zen 4 AMD chipset.
Our unit in review is the high-end configuration with the Hawk Point Ryzen 7 8840U CPU, integrated Radeon 780M GPU, 32 GB of soldered LPDDR5 6400 MT/s RAM, and 512 GB SSD. Other SKUs may come with the slower Ryzen 5 8640U and Radeon 760M graphics instead or have higher 2 TB storage options.
Competitors to the Win Mini include other Windows PC gaming handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go, Valve Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, or Aokzoe A1. However, the Win Mini is unique in that it integrates a full QWERTY keyboard alongside the usual gaming controller buttons.

Case — Nintendo DS Vibes
With a retail price of $1000 or more, the build quality of the Win Mini had better be nothing short of excellent to justify the relatively high cost. Thankfully, GPD has come a long way since the Win 3 days and it really shows with the Win Mini. Warping and creaking are almost non-existent when attempting to twist the device while all the buttons and keys feel firm for solid first impressions. It's able to stand toe-to-toe with the popular handhelds from larger manufacturers even if ergonomically the Win Mini controls may be less comfortable to grip.
The system is surprisingly compact due to its clamshell design. Whereas the ROG Ally or Legion Go have their controller buttons along the edges of the screen, the buttons on the Win Mini are on the C cover to reduce the overall footprint. Asus' design is slightly thinner, but the savings in weight and volume favor the GPD by wide margins.
Connectivity — Finally, USB-A
Port options are respectable for the size with the inclusion of USB-A being the most notable as this port is missing on popular handhelds like the Legion Go and ROG Ally. The dual USB-C ports allow for more versatile docking and charging capabilities including compatibility with most eGPUs via USB4. External displays are supported via USB-C DP.
There is no integrated webcam.

Maintenance
Accessories And Warranty
Detachable plastic controller grips are optional to improve the ergonomics when gaming. The standard one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices — Average Ergonomics
Keyboard
Keyboard designs get tricky on UMPC form factors and this is evident on all GDP products thus far. Whereas the Pocket 3 would incorporate more traditional plastic chiclet keys akin to a laptop, the Win Mini incorporates rubberized beveled keys more akin to an old Blackberry phone or old Samsung slider phone. Because of this, it's impossible to type quickly on the Win Mini meaning an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard is highly recommended for any sort of word processing. Typing is otherwise almost completely silent.
Gamepad
The integrated buttons are a mixed bag. Though their small sizes aren't an issue if you're accustomed to Switch controls, their positioning and tactility require getting used to. The directional pad and face buttons in particular are deeper towards the center of the device than on most other controllers meaning you'll have to stretch your thumbs more than usual to reach them. Feedback when pressing on the buttons is softer and shallower than on the Switch or Playstation controllers as well. The experience is satisfactory for shorter gaming sessions but still inferior to "proper" gaming handhelds from Valve, Asus, or others. Even the face buttons on the Win Max are firmer with stronger feedback than on the Win Mini.
Touchpad
Like the keyboard, the small multi-touch touchpad (4.8 x 3.9 cm) is only designed to be used occasionally or as a secondary input method to the touchscreen or joysticks. We find it much easier to simply touch the display directly especially since the touchpad integrates no tactile mouse keys which makes clicking unreliable. An external mouse becomes that much more important for workloads involving spreadsheets or cursor precision.
Display — The Asus ROG Ally Experience
The Win Mini employs the exact same TL070FVSX01-0 IPS panel as found on the Asus ROG Ally for a very similar viewing experience between both models. Our independent measurements show that both have almost the same color coverages, black-white response times, brightness levels, and more. The GPD supports FreeSync Premium and a 120 Hz native refresh rate with Windows VRR down to 60 Hz — just like on the Asus.

Calman results show color temperature to be slightly too cool but with otherwise decent grayscale and color accuracy. Nonetheless, a proper calibration would improve the average grayscale and color deltaE values from 4.4 and 2.36 down to just 2.1 and 1.3, respectively. We recommend applying our calibrated ICM profile above to get the most out of the sRGB display.

While 500 nits is brighter than on many other handhelds like the Win 4, Aokzoe A1, or Legion Go, it's still not bright enough to overcome glare when outdoors. The otherwise vibrant screen when indoors becomes faded and washed out under most outdoor conditions. For such a small screen where text sizes are extra small, the screen will need to be as bright as some smartphones where 1000 nits or higher are becoming commonplace.
Performance — AI-Ready AMD Zen 4 CPU
Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below.
Processor
The Win Mini features the same Ryzen 7 8840U processor as found on the 14-inch Minisforum V3 convertible. Due partly to our much smaller 7-inch form factor, however, raw multi-thread performance is about 20 to 25 percent slower for an overall performance that is more in line with the two-year old Ryzen 7 6800U. Even the Ayaneo Kun running on the last generation Ryzen 7 7840U can run up to 50 percent faster than our GPD unit powered by the newer Ryzen 7 8840U. The manufacturer has almost certainly underclocked the AMD chip when compared to competitors sporting similar processors.
Furthermore, Turbo Core performance is essentially nonexistent as demonstrated by our CineBench R15 xT loop test results below.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 2.2 GHz, 61 C, and 15 W when running Prime95 stress with no further dips or increases throughout the rest of the test. This observation complements the flat CineBench R15 xT results in the section above and relatively low power consumption levels in the section below. The limited 15 W power envelope is notably disappointing as Ryzen U-series CPUs in laptops like the HP Pavilion Plus 14 can often draw over 25 W in comparison.
When running Witcher 3, the GPU would cycle between 1289 and 1499 MHz compared to a steady 1833 MHz on the aforementioned HP laptop. The manufacturer-imposed underclocking is apparent in this situation.

System Performance
PCMark results are comparable to other high-end handhelds including the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme and Legion Go. Its Digital Content Creation subscore, however, is notably a bit slower which reflects the slightly slower GPU performance of the Win Mini.
Interestingly, WebXPRT 4 would always hang after several reruns and so this score has been omitted.

Storage Devices
Our unit ships with the small M.2 2230 Kioxia KBG50ZNS512G PCIe4 NVMe SSD which can also be found on some full-size laptops including the Dell Inspiron 16 7635 2-in-1 or HP ProBook 445 G10. Unlike full-length M.2 2280 drives, however, shorter 2230 drives are more likely to throttle under load due to their higher densities. When running DiskSpd in a loop, for example, transfer rates would start out reasonably high at 2400 MB/s for the first minute or so before steadily declining to 1300 MB/s throughout the rest of the stress test.

GPU Performance — Radeon 780M Is Great For Handhelds
The integrated Radeon 780M in our Win Mini is about 10 to 15 percent slower than the average laptop in our database equipped with the same GPU. This is perhaps not unexpected given the small form factor, but other gaming handhelds are nonetheless able to outperform our GPD. The Lenovo Legion Go and ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, for example, can each run up to 10 to 20 percent faster according to 3DMark. The overall slower performance can be attributed to the low TDP ceiling of the CPU as mentioned above.
Luckily, the Win Mini is still faster than Intel's last generation Iris Xe 96 EUs by about 40 to 50 percent.

Battery Power | 6467 (-3%) | 18376 (-2%) | 2397 (-0%) |
Running on Balanced mode instead of Performance mode does not entail significant performance losses as demonstrated by our Fire Strike results table above. Running on battery power impacts performance slightly more albeit by just a few percentage points.

Gaming Performance
Performance in actual games is reflective of the 3DMark scores above where the GPD would be consistently slower than many competitors by moderate margins. This is most apparent in titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or F1 22 where the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme or Legion Go can be over 20 to 40 percent faster when on the same graphical settings.

Unfortunately, idling on Witcher 3 to test for frame rate stability reveals that the Win Mini suffers from the same stuttering effects as on last year's Win 4. This issue was widely reported on by Win 4 users and so it's disappointing to see it return on the Win Mini. Frame rates would cycle between 40 and 45 FPS for seemingly no reason as shown by the graph below. FreeSync helps to keep screen tearing from being an issue, but the unstable frame rates should have been avoided in the first place.

Emissions — Smaller Fan = Higher Pitch
System Noise
Cramming a U-series processor designed for laptops into a portable 7-inch chassis puts a lot of pressure on the cooling solution. Thus, it's no surprise that the small 35 mm fan in the Win Mini never stops running no matter the onscreen load. Fan noise can be quiet when idling on desktop, but this quickly changes to the more audible mid 30 dB(A) range when playing video or web browsing even if on Power Saver mode.
When gaming, the Win Mini is louder than the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme but quieter than the Legion Go. We would like to see a larger diameter fan on future iterations of the model to lower the pitch.

Temperature
The back half of the chassis above the keyboard can become quite warm at over 46 C when gaming. Since the trackpad and controller buttons are positioned here, users should be prepared for sweaty fingers if the game requires face button controls. Conversely, the joysticks and shoulder buttons remain much cooler and more comfortable to use. It's still not ideal when compared to the ROG Ally or Aokzoe designs, but that is the compromise for having both a fully integrated controller and QWERTY keyboard all-in-one.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 46.6 °C / 116 F, compared to the average of 38.4 °C / 101 F, ranging from 26.6 to 55 °C for the class Handheld / UMPC.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 48 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 38 °C / 100 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.8 °C / 84 F, compared to the device average of 31.6 °C / 89 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (32.6 °C / 90.7 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 30.5 °C / 86.9 F (-2.1 °C / -3.8 F).

Energy Management — Conservative Consumption For Long Runtimes
Power Consumption
Power consumption is lower than expected even when gaming or running high loads. Witcher 3, for example, demands just 33 W compared to 45 W to 54 W on the Win 4 despite the fact that both models offer similar gaming performance. Similarly, Prime95 would also top out at around 33 W compared to 50+ W on the Win 4. Performance-per-watt has evidently increased significantly between Zen 3+ Rembrandt and Zen 4 Hawk Point which explains the impressive battery life in the next section below.
We're able to record a maximum consumption of 35 W from the small (~6 x 6 x 2.9 cm) 65 W USB-C wall wart AC adapter when running Prime95 stress. Consumption can reach over 50 W if charging and gaming simultaneously to ensure adequate charging levels during heavy use.

Battery Life
Runtimes are quite long despite the small battery capacity of 46 Wh. Browsing the web on Balanced mode would last for just over 8.5 hours to be slightly longer than both the Win 4 and ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. If gaming, however, runtimes would drop to just 90 minutes.
Charging from empty to full capacity is unfortunately quite slow at a little over 2 hours compared to 90 minutes on most other laptops. The time it takes to charge the battery can therefore be longer than the actual battery life when playing games.

Verdict — Jack Of All Trades, Master Of None
The Win Mini has a handful of compelling features over other gaming handhelds. Perhaps most significantly, its clamshell design and integrated keyboard are arguably more travel-friendly and versatile for users who want a UMPC that can game and also run the occasional office tasks. Chassis rigidity and even battery life are surprisingly good for such a small machine from a lesser-known brand like GPD. Key pillars like build quality, display quality, and core specifications are competitive against the current crop of popular handhelds from Asus, Lenovo, Valve, MSI, and others.
The GPD Win Mini feels luxurious and versatile with its standout design and integrated buttons. In terms of gaming performance and ergonomics, however, it doesn't quite reach the same levels as the less expensive Steam Deck or ROG Ally.
On the flip side, the GPD handheld suffers from the traditional "jack of all trades, master of none" problem where certain aspects have been traded in favor of its dual-purpose controller-keyboard design. More specifically, CPU and GPU performances are one or two steps slower than most other handhelds while the controller and keyboard just aren't very comfortable to use for extended periods. Optional removable grips are available as mentioned above, but at that point you may as well carry an external mouse, small Bluetooth keyboard, or dedicated controller in your bag.
Other aspects of the Win Mini deserve more fine-tuning including the high-pitched fan noise, unstable frame rates, and imperfect 4K60 video playback. Perhaps the biggest drawback of the model, however, is its high asking price of over $1000 in a market where faster gaming handhelds can be found for several hundred dollars less. You will therefore have to really value the integrated keyboard and clamshell design to justify the price premium.
