GPD Win Max 2 Core i7-1260P vs. Ryzen 7 6800U benchmarks: AMD is the superior choice for gaming

GPD is set to launch the 2022 Win Max 2 this September to replace the 2021 Win Max. Users can choose between the Intel Core i7-1260P or AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor each for the same price of $999 USD. In our extensive review of the Win Max 2, we found the new design to be a major improvement in both rigidity and display quality over the first generation 2021 model. If you can't decide between the Intel or AMD Win Max 2, however, our benchmarks below comparing the Win Max 2 Core i7-1260P to an Asus laptop running on the Ryzen 7 6800U should give a good idea of what to expect. It's not a perfect comparison as we've yet to test the AMD version of the Win Max 2, but the results should be pretty close nonetheless.

In terms of raw multi-thread CPU performance, the Ryzen 7 6800U has the Core i7-1260P beat by 50 to 60 percent. Conversely, Intel has AMD beat in single-thread performance albeit by a narrower 20 percent margin. Since most newer games are better optimized for multiple cores and threads, the single-thread advantage on the Intel option should only be a minor setback in this regard.

As for gaming performance, the integrated Radeon 680M is hands down faster than the Iris Xe 96 EUs solution in almost all games tested. The advantage can be as high as 30 to 50 percent in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, or Final Fantasy XV while less demanding titles like DOTA 2 Reborn may only see a performance boost of 10 percent at best. In either case, the AMD version looks like the safer bet for buyers who want to maximize gaming performance especially when both options cost the same price.

Users who value Thunderbolt 4 support may still want to choose the Intel version of the Win Max 2. Connecting Thunderbolt-specific docks, such as eGPUs, will not be possible on the AMD version. Check out our review on the Win Max 2 Intel version to learn more about its hardware and features.
