Compact powerhouse with the 2 nm M6 SoC - Apple Mac mini 2026 Review
Excellent performance & efficiency.
Apple now offers the Mac mini with the new M6 SoC, their first 2 nm chip. With significant CPU and GPU performance improvements, the small desktop system packs quite a punch and easily beats the rivals from AMD and Intel.Andreas Osthoff 👁 Published 🇩🇪 🇳🇱 ...
Verdict - Mac mini M6 is insanely powerful
The Mac mini 2026 is once again a very compact system and the new M6 SoC is a very impressive chip. It is Apple's first 2 nm chip for Macs and we can see performance improvements in all categories (single-core, multi-core, GPU) as well as efficiency improvements, which is the benefit of the new manufacturing process. The M6 currently offers the best single-core performance you can get, period, and there is a huge advantage over AMD, Intel as well as Qualcomm. The multi-core performance of the new entry-level chip is also excellent and easily beats the Panther Lake or Gorgon Point competition. You would need AMD's Strix Halo or the fastest Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme. And if the M6 is not powerful enough or you need more than 32 GB RAM, Apple also offers the Mac mini with the M5 Pro SoC.
The Mac mini is also a very quiet system unless you really stress the CPU and the GPU, but it is never annyoingly loud. Since Apple did not change the chassis, there are still teh same drawbacks as before. There are no maintenance options, upgrades are expensive (even though this is not limited to Apple anymore) and the power button location is still very inconvenient. There are also smaller things like the limitation to 160 MHz for the Wi-Fi 7 module, but considering the starting price of $899, this is not a huge deal-breaker.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
The new Mac Mini is available on September 22nd. The M6 SKU starts from $879 with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage on Amazon, for example.
Price comparison
Apple's Mac mini is the first device with the new M6 SoC, the first 2 nm processor from Apple. If you need even more performance, you can also configure the Mac mini with the M5 Pro SoC and up to 64 GB RAM. The new base model with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage starts at $899 and the M5 Pro SKU starts at $1699 (24 GB/512 GB SSD).
Specifications
Case & Connectivity
The 2026 Mac mini uses the familiar chassis, which offers excellent build quality. The silver aluminum enclosure is very compact (12.7 x 12.7 x 5 cm) and the M6 SKU tips the scale at 653 grams with an integrated power adapter. The power button is still on the rear left corner on the bottom, which can be annoying. You also still get two USB-C ports and the 3.5 mm stereo jack at the front, while all the other ports are located at the rear. The M6 SKU features three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro SKU supports Thunderbolt 5 ports. The N1 Wi-Fi module supports Bluetooth 6 as well as Wi-Fi 7, but limited to 160 MHz, so transfer rates are capped at around 2 Gbps. Transfer rates were very stable in our test and we did not experience any connectivity issues. You also get a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port by default, while a 10 Gbps port is available for $100.

Sustainability
Apple offers an extensive environmental report for the new Mac mini M6 on its website including the use of recycled materials as well as CO2 figures.

Performance - Apple M6 is a beast
Our review unit features the new M6 SoC, 24 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD storage. The M6 SoC can be configured with up to 32 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD storage, while M5 Pro SKUs are available with up to 64 GB RAM and 8 TB SSD storage.
Processor
The Mac mini is equipped with the brand-new M6 SoC (12 cores), Apple's first 2 nm chip for Macs. We recommend our analysis article for more technical information, but the performance of the new M6 is pretty ridiculous and it easily beats other mini-PCs powered by Intel's Lunar Lake or Panther Lake chips as well as AMD's Gorgon Point CPUs. In terms of multi-core performance, it is even not that far off AMD's Strix Halo systems like the compact HP Z2 Mini G1a, which is much more expensive. We have also included the results for the faster M5 Pro SoC, which is also available for the Mac mini.
Compared to the old Mac mini M4 the multi-core performance is roughly 40-50 % better. However, while we cannot use powermetrics for the CPU power draw on the new M6 so far, our power measurements indicate that the TDP is ~10 Watts higher in multi-core scenarios compared to the M4 and therefore comparable to the M5 SoC at around 30 Watts. If you are looking at the single-core performance, the new M6 is once again the fastest single-core chip you can get and Apple just increased the already huge gap to its rivals by another 10 % compared to the M5 and about 25 % compared to the M4 generation. For more efficiency results, please see our dedicated analysis article for the new M6 SoC.

System Performance & Storage Devices
The system performance if the Mac mini M6 is excellent and the benchmark results of the Mac mini M6 are much better compared to the Windows rivals. The combination of the M6 and the fast SSD (PCIe 4.0) has plenty of performance reserves even for more demanding tasks. If you need more than 32 GB RAM (maximum for the M6 SKU), you can get the M5 Pro SKU for up to 64 GB. The transfer rates of the SSD are close to 7 GB/s.

GPU & Gaming Performance
The new M6 GPU offers 12 cores and our technical information are once again limited, but we can say that the power consumption is slightly lower compared to the M5 GPU with 10 cores (19 Watts), but the performance is once again noticeably better. In synthetic benchmarks, the new M6 GPU is about 30-35 % faster compared to the M5 GPU and more than 70 % faster than the old M4 GPU (10 cores).
The M6 GPU is also pretty close to the Intel Arc B390 iGPU and easily beats the slower Panther Lake iGPUs as well as the Radeon 890M. The gaming performance is also improved and you can even play demanding titles like Cyberpunk or Baldur's Gate 3. The limitation is still the number of native titles for macOS.

System Noise
The Mac mini M6 is once again a very quiet system and it is usually inaudible. The fan is often turned off and barely audible at it lowest rpm level. High CPU load and our stress test will result in up to 42 dB(A), which is obviously audible, but still a bit quieter compared to the Mac mini M4. There are no other electronic noises.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are not a huge concern on a mini PC, but the Mac mini stays very cool even under maximum load. As mentioned before, we cannot monitor the CPU power draw, but our power measurements during the stress test in comparison with the Mac mini M4 suggest that the SoC consumes up to 45/50 Watts and then levels off to around 35 Watts.
Speakers
The Mac mini M6 still features a single speaker and the sound quality is actually not bad and it is definitely not only an emergency solution as long as your expectations are not too high.

Notebookcheck Rating
The new Mac mini with the M6 SoC is a very powerful system that easily beats AMD's and Intel's offerings in this price range and above. The base price is $300 higher compared to the Mac mini M4 two years ago, but all new PCs and laptops are more expensive than before. If you need even more performance, you can also get the small Mac with the M5 Pro SoC.
