LED production likely to succumb to rising demand

The LED industry might not be able to cope up in 2010

The usage of LED has been increased tremendously in the last couple of years due to its very low power consumption, and almost negligible heat emission. Adoption of LED backlighting has been on a rapid rise owing to the overwhelming response from various electronics category including notebook display panel. These days more often than not a notebook display panel comes equipped with LED as backlight.

Electronics market research firm iSupply says that there is a good chance that the LED industry won't be able to keep up with this demand in 2010 with the present infrastructure – as reported by Softpedia. iSupply reported 63 billion LED consumption in 2009, up from a mere 57 million in 2007. The maximum capacity of the LED industry is expected to be 75 billion, which means that it is not long before we run out of supply. This might hamper the electronics market greatly, especially the large LED monitors that require an exorbitant amount of LED units. This increase in demand is farther aggravated by new market areas like general illumination market, digital cameras etc.

"It is clear that demand is outstripping supply," told Jagdish Rebello, senior director and principal analyst for wireless research at iSuppli to Softpedia, "With LED market growth forecasted to rise by double-digit percentages for at least the next three years, including 2010, a drastic undersupply situation could occur this year unless additional capacity is brought online to meet the increased demand."

Although the industry is geared up to take the challenge, it will take time and it remains to be seen how the technological advancements cover this gap.
