Hands-on at Gamescom: This controller comes with a display, an operating system, and a Raspberry Pi chip

The Genki Manta is an extremely well-equipped controller that comes with a display and its own feature-rich operating system. You can even play small games on it—but its real advantage is likely the ease and breadth of its configuration options.

We previously reported on the Genki Manta, a high-spec controller currently available to back via a crowdfunding campaign. The financial risk for backers appears relatively low, with the current buy-in standing at roughly $200. Attendees can still check out the controller in person at Gamescom (Hall 10.1, Booth A037)—likely the only chance to get hands-on time before purchasing, at least within Germany. Future trade show appearances are scheduled for PAX West and the Tokyo Game Show. Although the unit on display remains a work in progress, it was fully functional during our hands-on test. With shipping not slated until February, manufacturer Human Things still has time to refine the hardware.

The Genki Manta looks relatively bulky in photos, but it fits comfortably in the hands and offers good overall ergonomics. It uses modern technology, specifically TMR joysticks whose resistance can be easily adjusted by turning them, triggers with adjustable travel, and action buttons that are not limited to two states but instead register analog input. This at least makes precise throttle and brake control in racing games conceivable. It is advertised as providing particularly precise and configurable feedback through Maglev linear motors—and this felt convincing during testing. The controller itself is not fully modular, but the battery should nevertheless be replaceable because the front and back are connected by plugs rather than cables. According to the manufacturer, the controller is easy to open by removing the screws.

Unfortunately, I was unable to test the controller across different games at the trade show. However, I was able to take a very detailed look at the display and the MantaOS operating system. The operating system is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2350. It offers a wide range of possibilities: the controller can be configured entirely via the display, for example, eliminating the need to install additional software on the PC. Macro programming is also supported, including a prerecording feature: much like a dashcam, it allows recently executed button combinations to be captured retroactively. Settings can be saved in eight profiles. Overall, the operating system already makes a very good impression, and even small games can be run directly on the controller. If an ecosystem develops around MantaOS, this could potentially provide significant added value. According to Human Things, conceivable and not entirely unrealistic possibilities include controlling streaming software and OBS Studio, as well as integrating an IR transmitter for controlling TVs. The controller is compatible not only with PCs but also with the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
