A Super Metroid remake is among potential Nintendo Direct announcements. A March 2026 leak named the SNES favorite and hinted at a release date in the near future. The co-developer of Samus Returns and Dread could embrace a pixel art style for the Switch 2 game.

Rumors are swirling ahead of the September 8th and 9th Nintendo Direct showcases. A Nintendo Music update encouraged fans waiting for a Super Metroid remake reveal. While the activity appears to be Google reindexing the site, a leak from earlier in 2026 teased the Metroidvania game for the Switch 2.

The next Metroid

Malo392 has become the center of attention after numerous predictions proved accurate. In March 2026, the source disclosed the Star Fox and Ocarina of Time remakes as two unannounced projects. Fox McCloud returned in June, while the first Nintendo Direct will share more details on the Zelda game.

Also on the insider’s list was the Super Metroid remake, with a release date that was allegedly “close.” Malo392 has support from other leakers, including Nash Weedle, who claimed MercurySteam was involved with the Switch 2 game. The studio co-developed both Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS and Metroid Dread for the original Switch.

YouTuber Poro Michele provided a clue about what the modernized SNES title will look like. The Italian content creator received a tip that it would have a “pixel art style.” That may suggest Nintendo is taking a restrained approach to visual upgrades. Nevertheless, developers can still revamp the graphics with a higher resolution and improved lighting.

Remake risks

Metroidvania games led by Silksong continue to thrive with a mainly 2D presentation. That said, Super Metroid is already available in the Nintendo Switch Online library of classics. To make a Switch 2 purchase appealing, MercurySteam could introduce limited 3D effects and cinematics inspired by Metroid Dread. Players would also appreciate more responsive controls.

A recent development raised hopes that the September 9th Nintendo Direct might shadowdrop the title. The gaming giant’s Nintendo Music website made a new reference to the SNES favorite’s soundtrack. Unfortunately, it seems Google was merely crawling the same pages.

If the Super Metroid remake doesn’t emerge during the livestream, malo392 also leaked a future Star Fox entry. The insider also hinted at 3D Mario, Wario Land, and Super Smash Bros. games.
