Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold 1 million copies on launch day

After 20 years, Capcom finally released a new title in the Onimusha series, and it appears the long wait has paid off as the game is selling like hot cakes. According to a report by Capcom, the new game, which is titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword, has reached a sales milestone, which has in turn pushed the total sales recorded by the franchise.
In an official press release, Capcom disclosed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over 1 million units on the first day it was released. The recorded sales for the new title has resulted in the cumulative sales for the franchise crossing over 10 million units.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released on September 4 for the PS5 (available on Amazon for $69.99), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. However, Capcom's sales figure doesn't give a breakdown of the sales. The new title features a new protagonist called Miyamoto Musashi, who was also the protagonist in the Netflix animated series that was released in 2023.
Capcom says Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which is set in Kyoto during the Edo-era, was able to record such high sales as a result of several marketing initiatives prior to the games release. It also attributes the success of the game to multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions which helped to increase awareness.
Just a few days to its release, IGN released its review for the game, scoring it a perfect 10 and describing it as “a damn fine action game.” The new game also won the award for Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game at the recently held Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany.
