Metroid Dread has received an unofficial PC port through an AI-assisted recompilation project, adding higher frame rates, widescreen support, and expanded graphics options. Available free on GitHub, the work-in-progress port requires players’ own game files updated to version 2.1.0, with the developer warning of potential crashes and glitches.

One of the highest-rated and most popular Nintendo Switch exclusives, Metroid Dread has received an unofficial PC port through a recompilation project. The port comes courtesy of GitHub user “yozander2009-stack” and uses AI assistance. It is available to download for free on GitHub. However, players should note that since this is an unofficial project, they will have to provide their own game files updated to version 2.1.0.

An unofficial port with extra features

The unofficial PC port adds new capabilities, including support for higher frame rates, higher resolutions, and widescreen aspect ratios. The FPS cap ranges from 60-240 FPS, while support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios is also available. The port can run on either OpenGL or Vulkan, with OpenGL being the preferred method currently.

Anisotropic filtering for sharper textures is also an available feature, while cutscenes and loading screens now work at a stable 60 FPS. The port also lets you change screen size, volume, and frame rate on the fly. There is also a wide range of support for different controllers.

The latest updates added an auto-updater, sharpening, a native FPS counter, auto-configuration of the best possible graphics settings, the ability to skip any gameplay cutscene, the option to add the port as a non-Steam game on Steam, and free mouse aiming. The port fixes lighting errors, stuttering in 30 FPS cutscenes, and the game’s built-in reverb effect.

An almost perfect port?

The port is lightweight and performance-friendly; memory usage totals only 3.7 GB, including runtime, code, and the graphics driver. The developer recommends 8 GB of RAM and claims it can also work on 4 GB PCs, albeit with longer load times. For the GPU, any GPU capable of OpenGL 4.3 will do, with claims that Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics can hit 60 FPS most of the time at 1x resolution.

The project is still a work in progress, and the developer does not promise a completely stable experience yet, warning of crashes and glitches. If the player encounters any issues, they can report them by creating a new issue on the GitHub page.
