Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was released in early 2024 as Ubisoft's first proper entry in the series since 2010's Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. It launched with a hefty $49.99 MSRP but has since received a permanent price drop to $29.99, and now enjoys a further 70% discount that takes its price down to a mere $8.99 till October 1.
The game itself is widely considered to be excellent. It holds an 86 Metascore, an 8.3 user score on Metacritic, and a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. As a metroidvania, The Lost Crown focuses on exploration while leaning heavily on the platforming style and strengths of previous Prince of Persia titles. It also borrows elements from the soulslike genre, without being quite as punishing with checkpoints and deaths. Exploration is rewarding—if a bit confusing at times, but what metroidvania isn't?—and there are typically shortcuts to key areas.
Combat is where The Lost Crown most shines, however. It's said to have some of the best combat in the genre, and sits at a table with games like Nine Sols, Blasphemous, and Hollow Knight. Like with Nine Sols, parrying is a key gameplay element of The Lost Crown, although it's possible to get through most of the game with dodging alone.
Parrying staggers enemies, fills up the special meter, and, in certain situations, directly leads into a counter that deals massive damage. All of that has drawn comparisons to FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice—another game famed for its parrying and deeply mechanical combat. Three weapons are available: Twin blades for combat, a bow, and a chakram, although the latter two are the same weapon in different forms.
The protagonist, Sargon, also gets several abilities across the game: the first type mostly being time-based for traversal, and then special attacks for combat called Athra Surges. Amulets also offer different perks, allowing for a level of build variety, although not impressively so.
While The Lost Crown offers thrilling combat that keeps the experience exciting for most of the playthrough, it has been criticized for its lackluster narrative. Its story is rather cliché, with characters getting little development, and mostly just serves to drive the actual gameplay elements. Platforming is a massive part of the game and, while generally engaging, gets tedious at times, particularly with the optional challenges.
