Streamers and influencers look set to become prime targets for satire in GTA 6. One scene from the footage released so far is currently making waves on Reddit, with many fans enjoying Rockstar’s jab at modern livestream culture.

Social satire has always been a staple of Grand Theft Auto. In GTA 5, Rockstar took particular aim at social media, celebrity culture and the broader media landscape. Rockstar development chief Rob Nelson recently explained to Trois Couleurs how the studio plans to approach satire in GTA 6, pointing to streamers as one potential target. The Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI (available for pre-order on Amazon) has already given us a taste of what that might look like.

In one scene (at 18:12), Lucia opens the trunk of a stolen car and finds Camilo inside – a streamer who appears to be taking part in a “Trunk Challenge.” Even as the ensuing chase unfolds, he keeps talking to his viewers, with messages from his livestream chat appearing in an on-screen overlay. Rockstar is clearly poking fun at modern IRL streaming and online challenge culture, where creators compete for attention with increasingly outrageous or absurd stunts.

Fans are loving the streamer satire

The scene has gone down well on Reddit, where many users see streamers as a natural target for Rockstar’s brand of satire. “Stream sniping gonna have a whole new meaning,” jokes u/BlueChamp10. Others are already looking forward to wreaking havoc on the game’s virtual livestreams. u/Droxcy calls the portrayal “kinda cringe,” but says he cannot wait to take out a streamer with a rocket launcher and watch the livestream abruptly cut out.

Not everyone is entirely convinced, however. Some fans caution against parodying specific real-world trends or personalities too closely, as references like these can quickly become dated. Rockstar appears to be well aware of that risk, though. As Rob Nelson explained in his interview with Trois Couleurs, the studio is deliberately choosing ideas that should still work years after the game’s release.
