Rockstar explains how GTA 6’s satire is meant to stay relevant

Satire is as much a part of Grand Theft Auto as a ski mask is of a robbery. With GTA 6 (available for pre-order on Amazon), however, Rockstar faces a tricky challenge: Development has been underway since 2015, meaning topics that felt highly relevant when the story was being written could already seem dated by the time the game reaches players. That does not mean Rockstar is stepping away from social satire. Speaking to Troiscouleurs, Rockstar development chief Rob Nelson explains how the team is trying to keep it relevant for years to come.

GTA 6 is set in the present day and, like earlier entries in the series, is intended to work as a kind of time capsule. According to Nelson, players should still be able to look back ten or twenty years from now and recognize the absurdities that defined the era. “We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there,” he explains. The key is to focus on ideas that fit naturally into the story and game world while still making sense years down the line.

Nelson points to influencers, streamers and questionable online challenges as suitable targets. Rockstar offered a glimpse of how this could play out during an exclusive gameplay presentation for Troiscouleurs: One TV commercial promotes a bloody burger stacked with 38 meat patties, while streamers take part in a live challenge from the trunk of a stolen car. Short-lived internet trends or memes that could be forgotten by the time the game launches, however, are less likely to make it into the final game.

The approach has been largely well received on Reddit. Many users joke that reality itself already feels like a GTA parody at times. Some are still concerned that the new installment could be less biting than its predecessors. Others disagree, arguing that Rockstar is not aiming for softer satire, but for satire with more staying power.
