Deal | Mercenary RPG with depth: Medieval sandbox is now under $10 on Steam

In Wartales, players lead a band of mercenaries through the plague-ridden and lawless remnants of the Edoran Empire. How they make a living is entirely up to them: as bounty hunters, merchants or, alternatively, through less-than-honest means. At the same time, the steadily growing band needs to be supplied with food, equipment and wages – otherwise, players can quickly find themselves at a disadvantage in the turn-based tactical battles. German gaming magazine Teilzeithelden reviewed the medieval sandbox in September 2023 and was particularly impressed by the successful mix of turn-based tactics and RPG elements, the varied battles and the extensive character progression. The co-op mode and dark, largely grounded medieval atmosphere were also well received. There is room for improvement when it comes to the rather limited weapon selection for certain classes, occasionally tedious micromanagement later in the game and loot balance. While loot is plentiful, the publication notes that self-crafted weapons and armor are often the better choice. In addition, the consequences of players' decisions are often relatively limited.

Wartales is also quite popular with the Steam community: 85% of more than 35,000 user reviews are positive. Metacritic lists the title with a Metascore of 79 and a User Score of 7.6.

Wartales is 72% off on Steam until September 21, bringing the price down to $9.79 from $34.99. According to SteamDB, this matches the previous all-time low, which was first reached in late June. There is good news for handheld gamers as well: Thanks to its official “Verified” status, the game runs without issues on the Steam Deck.
