The Nintendo Switch 2 ($499 on Amazon) is receiving one of its biggest updates to date with firmware version 23.0.0, which is now being rolled out to all console users. The patch introduces one exciting new feature in particular: VRR support while docked. Although the Nintendo Switch 2’s 120 Hz display has supported a variable refresh rate since launch, VRR could not be used on a TV – until now. Finally, a smart TV’s refresh rate can be dynamically adjusted to match a game’s actual frame rate.
This prevents screen tearing and results in a slightly faster response time, which can make games, especially those running at a lower frame rate, feel smoother. After the update, the Handheld Mode Boost can be enabled in the Quick Settings, rather than just in the System Settings. This option runs games developed for the first-generation Nintendo Switch in TV mode, even when the Switch 2 is being used as a handheld. While this results in better graphics for many games, it also increases power consumption.
Through the System Settings, it’s now also possible to transfer all data from one Nintendo Switch 2 to another Switch 2, which is handy, for example, when upgrading to the new Nintendo Switch 2 Zelda Special Edition. Audio settings can now be saved separately for different TVs. Nintendo is also improving how virtual game cards are handled. If a game card inserted into another Nintendo Switch (2) cannot be ejected, the corresponding game can still be played, provided there is an active internet connection. A complete list of the new features is available on Nintendo’s website.
