Deal | "A gem of turn-based strategy": Mercenary RPG drops below $10 on Steam for the first time

Wartales is not a traditional heroic adventure, but a struggle for survival in an open medieval world. As the leader of a mercenary company, players earn their living as bounty hunters, traders or bandits, with the path to prosperity entirely in their own hands. The RPG from Shiro Games is 72% off on Steam until July 13, reducing the price from $34.99 to $9.79. According to SteamDB, the current offer marks a new all-time low. The previous record was a 63% discount, most recently offered in November 2025.
In terms of gameplay, Wartales combines turn-based tactical combat with the freedom of an open-world RPG. Players recruit new companions, expand their camp, take up professions such as blacksmith, cook or alchemist and keep their steadily growing company supplied with food, equipment and, of course, wages. In battle, positioning, turn order and the right combination of classes can make the difference between victory and defeat. The entire campaign can also be played cooperatively with up to four players.

German gaming site Teilzeithelden described Wartales as “a gem of turn-based strategy with RPG elements,” praising its well-balanced mix of tactics, role-playing and party management, its varied battles and its atmospheric medieval world. However, the review criticized the limited weapon choices for certain classes, the relatively minor consequences of many decisions and the increasing amount of micromanagement required as the mercenary company grows.
On Steam, Wartales holds an 86% positive rating based on more than 35,000 user reviews. Reception on Metacritic is somewhat weaker, with a Metascore of 79 and a User Score of 7.6. The strategy RPG is also Steam Deck Verified and should therefore run without any major limitations.
