GTA 6 Online coming sooner than expected? Twitch CEO discusses Rockstar’s multiplayer plans

As previously reported, Take-Two Interactive recently addressed the future of GTA Online during its annual shareholder meeting. The publisher confirmed that it plans to continue supporting the existing multiplayer game even after GTA 6 launches, but did not reveal when the new game’s online component might arrive. Forbes journalist Paul Tassi previously speculated that “GTA 6 Online” could be as far away as 2028.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has now provided a much more specific clue. In a recent Bloomberg report (paywalled) that is currently being discussed on Reddit, Clancy talks about the impact GTA 6 is expected to have on the streaming platform. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer” he says. Since GTA 6 is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026, “next year” would mean 2027.

Clancy’s remarks also appear to be based on more than his own expectations. According to the Twitch CEO, the company has spoken extensively with Rockstar about its plans and helped the developer explore ways to involve content creators. His comments still do not amount to an official confirmation of a 2027 release, but they suggest that the wait for GTA 6’s multiplayer component may be shorter than previously thought. Some fans have speculated that it could arrive alongside the PC version, although that remains pure speculation for now.

Community concerned about monetization

“And there’s your cash cow,” reads the top comment in the accompanying Reddit thread – a remark that captures much of the sentiment in the discussion. Many users expect Rockstar to expand its monetization efforts with the new online mode. Beyond the familiar Shark Cards, much of the concern centers on GTA+ and the possibility of a broader subscription model. The bigger worry is that history could repeat itself. As with GTA 5, fans fear that a highly profitable online mode could eventually come at the expense of new single-player content. For that reason, some actually welcome a staggered release. It would allow the single-player campaign in GTA 6 (available for pre-order on Amazon) to remain in the spotlight for a while before multiplayer takes center stage.
