The game launches globally on October 23, 2026, with campaign early access beginning October 16 for digital pre-orders.

Mikkelsen's role and the story setup

The trailer gives the first extended look at Mikkelsen's character, who appears tied to a "weapon of war" being delivered to a mysterious enemy referred to in promotional material as the Archer. Activision has not officially confirmed that Mikkelsen plays the Archer directly, though his scenes strongly suggest a central antagonist role.

The story continues from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Following the assassination of General Shepherd, Task Force 141 is disbanded, and Captain Price goes into hiding. Ghost and Gaz are tasked with tracking him down, questioning whether Price's methods have crossed a line. Separately, a new war erupts as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, and the search for the mysterious weapon pulls the story beyond the peninsula into missions set in New York, Paris, and Mumbai. This marks Mikkelsen's second major video game role, following his appearance as Clifford Unger in Death Stranding.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Battle.net, and the Xbox PC app. Digital pre-orders on Standard or Vault Edition unlock campaign early access starting October 16, a full week ahead of launch.

Notably, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not be available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch, making it the first mainline Call of Duty title to skip day-one Game Pass since Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
