Acer Predator Atlas 8: First units arrive, initial impressions surface

Acer’s Predator Atlas 8 gaming handheld has begun reaching customers in the UK earlier than originally expected. Acer had initially targeted an October launch before bringing availability forward in North America and EMEA. The first reported deliveries include a 24GB model purchased for £1,300 (approx. $1741) at Currys, the impressions of which the owner has detailed in a Reddit thread.  

The overall tone is largely positive, with the display described as comparable to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. The controls have gotten mixed feedback due to mushy buttons and D-pad. Performance is said to be solid across several tested games, although power consumption appears inconsistent when set at 30W ("Balanced"). The fans are considered quiet and free of noticeable whining, while the speakers are very loud but produce an unusual echo. The biggest criticism is the non-functional sleep mode, which leaves the fans running; the owner is using hibernation instead.

The Atlas 8 pairs Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme processor with integrated Arc B390 graphics, 24GB of LPDDR5X-7467 memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Its 8-inch IPS touchscreen runs at 1,920x1,200 and 120Hz, with variable refresh rate support and up to 500 nits of brightness. An 80Wh battery is on board, alongside dual-fan cooling and Hall-effect triggers.

Connectivity is comparatively extensive for a handheld, including two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7 and a UHS-II microSD card reader. Acer rates the 80Wh version at under 810 grams, although the aforementioned owner reports the weight at 870 grams, highlighting the differences that can occur between advertised specifications and individual retail units. When exactly the Predator Atlas 8 will begin shipping in the US and EMEA is unclear; if we take Acer at their word, it should be anytime from now until September 30.
