Ubisoft’s latest entry in the Prince of Persia franchise isn't a first-person title, rather, it's a 2D roguelike. The Rogue Prince of Persia launched on August 20, 2025, after spending over a year in early access on PC. The EA period began in May 2024. Available on PC, PlayStation 5 (curr. $449.99 on Amazon), and Xbox Series X/S, the game features classic parkour and combat with procedural level design and build customization.
The Rogue Prince of Persia delivers a 2D side-scrolling experience where movement and quick reflexes matter more than anything else. Players have to navigate huge levels filled with traps, enemies, and environmental hazards, which will be quite familiar to PoP fans. They have to rely on classic acrobatics - wall running, vaults, and swings - mixed with a new roguelike structure that resets progress upon death but rewards with permanent upgrades over time. The game’s combat is fast, with both melee and ranged attacks, and over 100 unique weapons and medallions to suit multiple playstyles.
The narrative is basically a Persian kingdom under siege, corrupted by dark magic and internal strife. Yet story moments are pretty sparse, going by player feedback. There are not a lot of cutscenes in the game. This allows gameplay to take the spotlight, leaving much of the lore to be discovered through exploration. Its soundtrack complements this game design with multiple traditional influences that add their own color to the pace and atmosphere.
Reception so far has been in the favor of smooth parkour mechanics and combat depth. A lot of players like the varied weapon system and replay value. Critics did mention that the story and character development sometimes fall short, and that the early gameplay curve can feel more gentle compared to other roguelites. However, everything else looks to be promising.
What The Rogue Prince of Persia is doing is taking an established formula and reshaping it with roguelike elements (and a unique artistic vision). You can pick up The Rogue Prince of Persia on Steam for $29.99.
