If you’ve ever wanted to face cannibalistic hillbillies straight out of The Hills Have Eyes, now’s your chance on Steam: Resident Evil 7 Biohazard marks a chilling return to the series’ survival horror roots – and it’s currently 60% off.

The Resident Evil series is a cornerstone of the horror genre, though it has wrestled with identity issues over the years. With Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Capcom brought the franchise back to its roots – and for the first time, into a first-person perspective. Combining classic survival horror elements with strikingly realistic visuals, the game offers an immersive and genuinely unsettling experience.

In Biohazard, players take on the role of Ethan Winters, searching for his missing wife in a seemingly abandoned farmhouse in the American South. It doesn’t take long before he becomes ensnared in the nightmare of the Baker family, notorious for their grotesque habits and terrifying presence. Claustrophobic hallways, unsettling enemies, and the return of classic puzzles and limited resources come together to create a tense horror atmosphere.

The gameplay in Resident Evil 7 fully embraces classic survival horror, with the new first-person perspective amplifying the sense of vulnerability. The Baker family act as unpredictable and terrifying foes, while the grotesque Molded maintain constant pressure. Instead of relying on fast-paced gunplay, the game demands a more strategic approach: ammo, healing items and inventory space are all scarce, and carrying too much can slow you down when it matters most. A simple block mechanic allows Ethan to mitigate incoming damage, adding another layer of strategy to combat. Beyond the fighting, exploration and puzzle-solving take center stage, offering a nostalgic nod to the series’ early days.

In its German review, PC Games praised Resident Evil 7 for its intense and oppressive horror atmosphere. Eurogamer summed it up bluntly: "Finally full pants again!" The Baker family stood out as a compelling trio of antagonists, while the level design earned praise for its clever layout and pacing. However, the game’s second half faced some criticism for losing the momentum built in the early chapters. And while the story has strong moments, reviewers noted that it occasionally feels overly convoluted.

Thanks to its return to the series’ core strengths, Resident Evil 7 was well received by both fans and critics. PC Games awarded it a solid 8 out of 10. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 86 and a User Score of 8.2. The response from the Steam community is especially noteworthy: 95% of more than 100,000 user reviews are positive.

60% discount on Steam

Resident Evil 7 is normally priced at around $20 on Steam, but until August 24 it’s available at a 60% discount for just under $8. According to SteamDB, this is the game’s lowest historical price, although this discount has been offered before. It’s also marked as “Verified” for the Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $475), making it fully playable on the go. And if you’re still undecided, a free demo is available to try before you buy.
