The Killing Antidote is an Early Access survival horror game in development at MetalStar Studio. They are a small two-person team of dedicated developers from China. It draws inspiration from Resident Evil and combines it with a dress-up mechanic similar to titles like Stellar Blade.
And like Stellar Blade, this game puts the female protagonist front and center, so much so that she is a bullet point on the game's Steam description.
There is a lot of customization and clothing pieces to mix and match to suit your preference, but it does come with a caveat - they need to be unlocked. How do you unlock them? Well, that's where the rest of the game comes in.
The gameplay in The Killing Antidote mixes the weighty movement of the Resident Evil remakes with an expanded melee system and a quick dash that can get you out of a tight spot. The melee feels nice and chunky with all the squishy sound effects you would expect from a zombie game.
Aside from the melee weapons, there is a decent selection of guns like revolvers, pistols, shotguns, and rifles. To add a little flavor, we also get our hands on a bow with different arrow types. Then there are the throwables, ala grenades, mines, and the BFG equivalent - The Zombie Brain Smasher.
Of course, none of this would be fun if the enemies weren't fun and varied. Thankfully, The Killing Antidote knows this, and all the enemies they throw at you have a unique gimmick. Your average zombies are slow and lumbering, easy to take down but dangerous in packs. Then there are Maniacs, and as the name suggests, they run at you faster, backing you into a corner so that the crawlers get you, which are four-legged abominations that can scale walls and jump at you from a distance.
There is a high amount of replayability here, and the central hook of unlocking clothing pieces and outfits ties them all together. Despite the Early Access moniker, there is a decent amount of game here with two long chapters, and tons of side content and challenge rooms that unlock special cosmetics.
The game is currently 20% off, priced at $23.99 (€23.19 or £19.99), which is a decent price if you are itching for some Resident Evil-style gameplay.
