A new retro-styled JRPG is arriving for PC gamers today: Quartet is a brand new turn-based title from Something Classic Games, and it is launching on Steam on August 26. The game is all about a classic presentation and modern pacing.
Quartet structures its campaign around four opening chapters that can be played in any order before merging into a single narrative with a total of eight playable characters. This approach intends to balance player agency with a converging main plot. The release targets Windows, macOS, and Linux on PC, with additional versions planned for GOG and the Epic Games Store.
Combat is mostly menu-driven and turn-based with a visible turn order, four active party members, and four reserves. An immediate-turn swap system and passive ability point regeneration for benched characters are core mechanics for the game. It should encourage party rotation and resource planning across various encounters.
Narratively, Quartet has pretty interesting scenarios - such as train heists linked to a wider conspiracy, airship conflict on a contested frontier, and an awakening of magical power - all moulded into a broader storyline about the fate of magic and longstanding historical upheaval. The game structure looks like it respects the 16-bit-era storytelling, which is always nice to see. Snapshots from the game are very reminiscent of Stardew Valley, going solely by the art style.
Ahead of launch, a publicly available demo introduced the core loop to interested players. The demo also included timeline-driven tactics, equipment-driven progression, and exploration across varied biomes. The full release will build on that same formula, with the complete set of eight protagonists and the combined narrative path.
Console releases for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch are planned for later this year, as the devs have stated in this Reddit thread. You can also check out the Quartet release day trailer below.
