Sniper Elite 4, developed and published by Rebellion Developments, was released on February 14, 2017. Picking up right after its predecessor, the game casts players as OSS sniper Karl Fairburne, who is sent to Italy in 1943. His mission: to support the Italian resistance in their fight against fascism and uncover a secret Nazi superweapon before it can shift the balance of the war.
Sniper Elite 4 delivers what Rebellion’s Creative Director, Tim Jones, once described in an interview with Gamereactor as a “sniper’s paradise.” The game features expansive maps with numerous strategic vantage points ideal for long-range takedowns. A careful, tactical approach is essential: players must consider distance and wind, and on higher difficulty settings even the sound of their shots. In its review, the German gaming magazine GamePro highlighted both the refined sniper mechanics and the inventive stealth system as standout features.
The game also scored points with its long-term appeal, offering additional content and varied modes. The campaign supports two-player co-op and is supplemented with a PvE wave-based mode and competitive PvP. However, the reviewers noted that the story and characters lacked depth. They also criticized occasionally stiff animations and a skill tree that added little real value. Despite these shortcomings, GamePro awarded Sniper Elite 4 a solid 81 out of 100. On Steam, the reception is even more enthusiastic: of roughly 60,000 reviews, 91% are positive. Metacritic paints a slightly different picture, with a Metascore of 78 and a User Score of 7.1. For those who enjoy gaming on the go, the game is Steam Deck verified (available on Amazon for $465).
