Hollow Knight: Silksong was one of the most anticipated attractions at Gamescom 2025, ahead of a recent announcement. Now that the industry knows the Silksong release date is September 4th, it’s delaying the debut of at least one competitor. Reported by Twisted Voxel, Aeternum Game Studios is postponing its Metroidvania game, Aeterna Lucis.
Aeternum updated its community through a social media post. The developers don’t hide that Hollow Knight inspired Aeterna Lucis, as well as its 2021 predecessor, Aeterna Noctis. They planned to unveil the new title in September, but the Hollow Knight: Silksong release date has pushed its arrival to 2026. With a similar blend of platforming and combat, the vastly more popular Team Cherry game would overshadow Aeterna Lucis.
The studio will utilize the extra time to make minor improvements. Aeternum also mentions not having the dev kits to port the PC game to all next-gen consoles. Nintendo has reportedly been slow in authorizing the tools for third-party games. That roadblock could hinder a Switch 2 release.
Aeterna Lucis and Silksong feature comparable non-linear gameplay. Still, the Metroidvania games may have some notable differences. Aeterna Noctis offered more environments to explore than Hollow Knight, although Team Cherry has expanded the world for Silksong. However, gamers often found Aeterna Noctis too challenging with frustrating controls. Aeternum hopes to address these frustrations with its sequel.
GTA 6 is the obvious example of another major project influencing its competition. EA is one of several publishers relieved by the GTA 6 release date delay to May 2026. With the game poised to dominate sales, even the popular Battlefield 6 faced potential lost revenue. After completing the second open beta, the shooter game will ship on October 10th.
