Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets Nintendo Switch 2 update with surprising new features
Although the Nintendo Switch 2 ($499 on Amazon) was released alongside Mario Kart World, many players still prefer Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, not least because of its tighter, often more varied courses. Nintendo has now released a free update for the twelve-year-old game, which optimizes it for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Above all, the update promises shorter loading times and higher resolution, both on the Nintendo Switch 2’s 1,080p display and on a connected 4K TV. Surprisingly, after the update, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports split-screen multiplayer for up to eight players – previously, only four players could play simultaneously on a single console.
Nintendo emphasizes that the console supports "only" seven controllers originally developed for the first-generation Nintendo Switch, so at least one Joy-Con 2 must be used for this setup. Another new feature is CameraPlay – if you connect a compatible USB-C camera to the Nintendo Switch 2, you can now display a small, round window with a live video feed over your own vehicle, both in online multiplayer and in local multiplayer mode.
Nintendo has slightly sped up the game – after the update, all vehicles behave as if the player had collected one more coin. Players who have purchased all track DLCs will gain access to an Endurance Mode after the update, in which 96 races are run in a row, that is, one race on every track that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has to offer.
