RedMagic has formally introduced its industry-first flat-screen back" flagship smartphones. The new design joins other signature rarities such as integrated RGB fans, high-speed shoulder keys and class-leading screen-to-body ratios thanks to fifth-gen under-display camera (UDC) tech. The new Android smartphones have up to 24GB of RAM to go with their Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoCs for just under US$1,000.

RedMagic has confirmed that the 9 Pro and Pro Plus are the first of their line to shed rear camera humps as well as punch-hole selfie cameras. The brand claims to have invented a 1-piece glass back that combines the properties of camera lenses with "32%" more scratch resistance.

The cameras hiding under this glass consist of dual 50MP main/ultrawide-angle lens cameras, with a tiny 2MP macro lens thrown in beside them. On the other, equally flat, side, the 9 Pro and Pro Plus have a 6.8-inch FHD+ display of nearly the exact same specs as that of the 8S Pro - except that this "5th-gen" UDC panel has Q9+ technology from BOE for a max brightness boosted to 1,600 nits.

Accordingly, RedMagic asserts that the 9 Pro series goes "beyond e-sports" in this generation. Then again, shoulder buttons and RGB-augmented ICE active cooling systems are still in place, upgraded to 520Hz with "+20% sensitivity" and to 22,000 rpm speeds with a new "waterfall duct" design respectively.

Those enhancements, combined with the new Red Core R2 Pro co-processor for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is touted to keep frame-rates as high as 60fps in games such as Genshin Impact.

Therefore, the 9 Pro and Pro Plus are essentially the exact same smartphone - except for the new 6,500mAh battery. Then again, this new all-time-high capacity comes with the compromise of relatively slow 80W charging, which is probably why the new spec is a 9 Pro exclusive.

The 9 Pro Plus shrinks to 5,500mAh by comparison - but does come with RedMagic's ultra-fast 165W wired charging tech. It is also the only new RedMagic smartphone with a 24GB RAM/1TB internal storage SKU, which ships in Dark Night Knight only for 6,999 yuan (~US$983).

At the other end of the scale, the 9 Pro is the only variant with an 8GB/256GB option, priced at just 4,399 yuan (~US$618). Getting the device in its additional Transparent Dark Night or Transparent Silver Wings colorways would increase that cost to 4,999 yuan (~US$703), as it would come with 12GB of RAM in that case.

Finally, the RedMagic 9 Pro Plus also comes with 16GB of RAM, which start at either 5,499 yuan (~US$772) or 5,699 yuan (~US$800) depending on whether the buyer wants an opaque or Transparent look respectively. Both new flagship smartphones are available to pre-order in China from now, and are hopefully on the way in one form or another to the global market soon.
