Intel Pentium Gold 5405U vs Intel Core i7-4600U vs Intel Core i7-4610Y

Intel Pentium Gold 5405U

► remove from comparison Intel Pentium 5405U

The Intel Pentium 5405U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core SoC based on the Whiskey-Lake architecture and has been launched in 2019. The CPU can be found in ultrabooks as well as normal notebooks. In addition to two CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 2.3 GHz (no Turbo Boost), the chip also integrates an HD Graphics 610 GPU and a dual-channel DDR4-2133/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The SoC is manufactured using a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors (14nm++).

Architecture

Intel basically uses the same micro architecture compared to Skylake, so the per-MHz performance does not differ. The manufacturer only reworked the Speed Shift technology for faster dynamic adjustments of voltages and clocks, and the improved 14nm process allows much higher frequencies combined with better efficiency than before. Compared to Kaby-Lake Refresh, Whiskey Lake only features a slightly improved process from 14nm+ to 14nm++.

Performance

The average 5405U in our database is in the same league as the Pentium N5000, as far as multi-thread benchmark scores are concerned. Performance of this kind is only sufficient for basic day-to-day tasks such as checking one's inbox, as of early 2023.

Graphics

The integrated graphics unit called UHD Graphics 610 (similar to the HD Graphics 510) represents the "GT1" version of the Whiskey Lake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). Its 12 Execution Units, also called EUs, run at 300 - 950 MHz and offer a performance somewhat below the older HD Graphics 4400. Only a few games of 2018 can be played smoothly in lowest settings.

Power consumption

This Pentium has a default TDP of 15 W (also known as the long-term power limit) which is a little too high to be appropriate for a passively cooled laptop, tablet or mini-PC. OEMs are free to reduce that value somewhat, 12.5 W being the lower limit, with clock speeds and performance taking a hit as a result.

Intel Pentium 5405U is built with a fairly old, as of early 2023, 14 nm process making for subpar energy efficiency.

Intel Core i7-4600U

► remove from comparison Intel 4600U

The Intel Core i7-4600U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks launched in Q3 2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.1 GHz, but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz for 1 active core (2.9 GHz for 2 cores).

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving the performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

The performance of the Core i7-4600U is similar to the old and slightly higher clocked Core i7-3687U. However, when using new instruction sets such as AVX2, the performance can be significantly higher. Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 MHz up to 1100 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it somewhat faster than the HD Graphics 4000 at similar clock speeds. However, the HD 4400 is a bit slower than the HD 5000 found on other ULV models (e.g. i7-4650U).

The i7-4600U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including the graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset. Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.

Intel Core i7-4610Y

► remove from comparison Intel 4610Y

The Intel Core i7-4610Y is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks and tablets launched in Q3 2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.7 GHz, but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz.

Architecture

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

Performance

Depending on the benchmark, the Core i7-4610Y offers a performance somewhere between a Core i3-2330M and a Core i7-4500U. Due to TDP limits, the full Turbo Boost will be only active for very short periods of time or in single-thread benchmarks. Overall, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications.

Graphics

The integrated HD Graphics 4200 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 850 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 at similar clock speeds. However, the HD 4200 is significantly slower than the HD 4400 found on other ULV models with higher clocks and TDP.

Power Consumption

The i7-4610Y is rated at a TDP of 11.5 watts (SDP 6 watts) including the graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset. Therefore, the CPU is suited for very small ultrabooks or tablets.
