Notebookcheck's Top 10 Slim & Light Gaming Laptops

Florian Glaser (translated by Andreas Osthoff), 08/01/2017

May 2018 update. Here you will find the latest best slim and lightweight mobile gaming notebooks reviewed by Notebookcheck. Our list of top models is regularly updated, maintained and commented on and should assist in purchase decisions.

"Mobile gaming" - what sounded like a bad joke a few years ago has already become common practice; at least in the notebook range. Processors and graphics cards are getting smaller and more power-efficient, which makes cooling easier. As a result, powerful components can be packed into slimmer and slimmer cases. Although 17-inch powerhouses still dominate (see our 17-inch gaming notebook charts), the 15-inch and smaller range is steadily growing; keyword: "slim gaming".

The following table shows an overview of the Top 10 gaming laptops reviewed by Notebookcheck in the previous 12 months that weigh less than 2.5 kg and are still available. If ratings are equal, the latest review is listed first. You can sort the table by clicking its headers or via text filter (e.g. "matte").

1st - Gigabyte Aero 15X v8

Gigabyte Aero 15X v8
Gigabyte Aero 15X v8

The wolf in sheep's clothing is a fitting description for the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 (2,500 Euros). While the majority of gaming laptops is rather bulky and heavy, respectively, and uses a flashy design, Gigabyte ships its 15-inch system with a slim, light, and sturdy case that looks understated. The RGB keyboard illumination is the only indicator for a gaming system.

Inside you will find the latest and greatest mobile hardware with Intel's Core i7-8750H and Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q, which are noticeable under higher workloads. Besides the hexa-core CPU, the 144 Hz panel is one of the most important changes over the previous model. Gigabyte once again waives G-Sync and implements Optimus to improve the battery runtime. This is a good decision considering the mobility of the laptop. Slim bezels and the certification for X-Rite Pantone are additional selling points. Note: The Aero 15X v8 will also be available with a 4K screen, which is supposed to cover 100 % of the AdobeRGB gamut.

2nd – Alienware 13 R3

Alienware 13 R3
Alienware 13 R3

The third revision of the Alienware 13 differs from conventional gaming notebooks in several aspects. On the one hand, there is the extensive lighting (including touchpad), and the striking design, which may not appeal to everyone. On the other hand, the case quality is different in general. For example, the manufacturer uses a combination of metal and (rubberized) plastic, which increases the weight but ensures excellent stability. The build quality is also flawless.

Thanks to its promising OLED display (2560x1440 pixels), which outclasses TN and IPS panels, the test model priced at 2200 Euros (~$2597) achieves one of the best ratings overall. Contrast, viewing angles, color intensity, and response times are excellent. The glossy touch surface, which reflects heavily, is a small disadvantage.

Otherwise, we can only complain about the missing card reader, the not quite perfect maintenance and the high depth. At 26.9 cm (~10.6 in), the device appears at least like a 14-inch laptop. Nevertheless, the Alienware 13 R3 delivers a so far unrivaled performance in the 13-inch segment. The top model comes with a PCIe SSD, a Core i7-7700HQ, and a GeForce GTX 1060. The latter two are more common in 15-inch devices and larger. In case the performance might become too low at a future date, it can be improved with external solutions such as a Graphics Amplifier or Thunderbolt 3 (eGPU).

Note: According to several forum messages, the current Alienware generation frequently suffers from temperature problems. Our tests of the 15 R3 confirm this (high, inconsistent CPU values). Apparently, the cooling system is too weak and/or the quality or quantity of thermal grease is too low.

3rd - MSI GS65 8RF

MSI GS65 8RF
MSI GS65 8RF

MSI currently has three notebooks in the slim & light gaming ranking. In addition to the GE63VR 7RF and GS73VR 7RG, the GS65 8RF also managed to secure a spot. The 15-inch system is the ideal companion for road trips thanks to a weight of just 1.8 kg. The lack of G-Sync is explained by Optimus, which improves the battery runtime. The GS65 does not lack 3D performance, either. Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q is competing with the previous high-end GPU GTX 980 and can handle all modern games in the native 1080p resolution and with good graphics (144 Hz panel). The test model for 2300 Euros also includes 16 GB DDR4-RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and the Core i7-8750H.

The 15-inch MSI system cannot quite keep up with the Gigabyte Aero 15X, which has very sim bezels as well. The GS65 is the quieter system, but the build quality of the chassis is worse, it is not as stable, and the maintenance is more complicated. Both the keyboard and the battery runtime of the Aero 15X are better as well.

4th - Asus ROG Zephyrus M GM501

Asus ROG Zephyrus M
Asus ROG Zephyrus M

The ROG Zephyrus from Asus is two times in our Top 10 ranking. Both the GX501 and the GM501 look very similar at first, but there are several differences. It starts with the input devices, which are once again back at the usual spot on the GM501. The two systems also differ in terms of specs. While the GX501 can be equipped with a GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q, the less expensive sibling only get the GeForce GTX 1070.

The main rival is the updated Gigabyte Aero 15X, which is also equipped with Intel's powerful Coffee Lake Core i7-8750H, but it weighs less, lasts much longer on battery power, and has much narrower bezels.

5th – Razer Blade 2017

Razer Blade 2017
Razer Blade 2017

Even thinner and lighter than first and second place is the 2017 edition of the Razer Blade. For around $2,400 you get a 14-inch 4K display with a whopping 3840x2160 resolution - highest resolution resolution of the top 3 slim gaming notebooks! Just like on the Alienware 13 R3 the glossy display suffers from noticeable reflections. And just as annoying as its highly reflective display is the Razer Blade’s noise emission, which is why it didn’t make it top the top of this list.

In most categories the Razer Blade’s performance matches its high price. As on all Razer notebooks, the aluminum case is very sturdy and well made. The input devices are solid and decent, and overall temperatures are fairly low. Thunderbolt 3 is included and can be used to connect the Razer Blade to external GPUs. The included GeForce GTX 1060 is already unable to cope with the 4K display.

6th – MSI GE63VR 7RF

MSI GE63VR 7RF
MSI GE63VR 7RF

While MSI's GT series is designed for passionate gamers primary playing at their desks at home, the GE series has a bigger focus on the mobility. Let us take the 15-inch models, for example: Compared to the GT62VR 7RE, which is 4.0 cm (~1.6 in) high and tips the scale at 2.9 kg (~6.4 lb), the GE63VR 7RF is significantly slimmer (2.8 cm/~1.1 in)) and lighter (2.4 kg/~5.3 lb). Gaming enthusiasts will still appreciate the powerful components. The Core i7-7700HQ is supported by 16 GB of DDR4-RAM, an SSD/HDD combo as well as the GeForce GTX 1070, which can compete with the performance of the GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q.

MSI also deserves praise for the aluminum surfaces and the RGB keyboard illumination. Whether you appreciate the 120 Hz display depends on your personal preferences. The TN panel offers short response times, but the viewing angle stability is mediocre. The lack of G-Sync is a matter of taste as well. We prefer long battery runtimes for a mobile device, which is realized via Nvidia's Optimus on the GE63VR.

7th – Asus ROG Zephyrus

Asus ROG Zephyrus
Asus ROG Zephyrus

The ROG Zephyrus is certainly one of the most exciting gaming notebooks of recent years. Thanks to the brand-new Max-Q-design from Nvidia, Asus has been able to squeeze a GeForce GTX 1080 (GX501VI) or a GeForce GTX 1070 (GX501VS) into a 1.8 cm slim case, which remains quieter under load than we expected. However, the 15-inch model reaches quite high surface and component temperatures in 3D mode. Furthermore, the combination of slim chassis and excellent performance is at the expense of battery life, connectivity, and maintenance. Moreover, you will have to live with the unusual positioning of the input devices.

Plus points include the contrast-rich and viewing-angle-stable 120 Hz panel (G-Sync) and the stylish case made of high-end materials. It is debatable whether the bundle is worth the price tag of over 2000 Euros (~$2356). Comparably fast notebooks (without Max-Q design) are available for significantly less money.

8th - Schenker Key 15

Schenker Key 15
Schenker Key 15

The Key 15 is also from Schenker. It is a multimedia/gaming hybrid, but it could also be an office notebook thanks to its subtle and slim chassis. However, do not be fooled by the looks: The 15-inch system is powered by a Core i7-7700HQ and a GeForce GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 Max-Q, respectively.

The underlying Clevo barebone P955HP6 unfortunately suffers from a mediocre fan control at the moment (high 3D fan noise, unnecessary pulsating while idling). Other drawbacks include the fluctuating CPU Turbo, missing Thunderbolt 3, and the weak sound. Positive aspects include the low weight, RGB keyboard illumination, and the clean Windows installation without any bloat ware. The biggest highlight of the test model was the optional UHD screen, even though the resolution is big challenge for the GPU in demanding games.

9th – MSI GS73VR 7RG

MSI GS73VR 7RG
MSI GS73VR 7RG

MSI has not changed the case compared to the GS73VR 6RF, but customers still get a good 17-inch notebook in 2017. The GS73VR 7RG is not only conveniently light (2.4 kg/~5.3 lb) for a gaming system, but is also surprisingly slim (2.0 cm/~0.8 in).

You still get powerful components. The GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q has no problems with the native resolution of the test model. The bright 120 Hz TN display has 1920x1080 pixels. We are not so convinced by the port layout and the system noise. A WLAN runtime of about 3 hours is not very good either considering the missing G-Sync support.

10th – Acer Predator Triton 700

Acer Predator Triton 700
Acer Predator Triton 700

Acer's Predator Triton 700 is a direct rival to the Asus ROG Zephyrus. Although the overall scores and the slim-gaming design hardly differ, each model has its own advantages and disadvantages. While the Acer notebook has the edge in terms of case, keyboard (mechanical), ports, and the maintenance, Asus' notebook is equipped with a better touchpad as well as lower temperature and noise development.

The ROG Zephyrus is also cheaper; a similarly equipped Triton 700 currently retails for 600 Euros (~$708) more in Germany. But both models are expensive at 3500 and 2900 Euros (~$4122 and ~$3416), respectively. You have to decide for yourself whether the additional charge over the thicker GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 notebooks (which usually perform better due to the lack of Max-Q) is justified. The display is a 120 Hz panel based on the IPS technology with G-Sync.
