Staff, 08/01/2017

December 2017 update. Here you will find the latest best slim and lightweight mobile gaming notebooks reviewed by Notebookcheck. Our list of top models is regularly updated, maintained and commented on and should assist in purchase decisions.

For the original German article, see here.

"Mobile gaming" - what sounded like a bad joke a few years ago has already become common practice; at least in the notebook range. Processors and graphics cards are getting smaller and more power-efficient, which makes cooling easier. As a result, powerful components can be packed into slimmer and slimmer cases. Although 17-inch powerhouses still dominate (see our 17-inch gaming notebook charts), the 15-inch and smaller range is steadily growing; keyword: "slim gaming".

The following table shows an overview of the Top 10 gaming laptops reviewed by Notebookcheck in the previous 12 months that weigh less than 3 kg (~6.6 lb) and are still available. If ratings are equal, the latest review is listed first.

Alienware 13 R3
Alienware 13 R3

The third revision of the Alienware 13 differs from conventional gaming notebooks in several aspects. On the one hand, there is the extensive lighting (including touchpad), and the striking design, which may not appeal to everyone. On the other hand, the case quality is different in general. For example, the manufacturer uses a combination of metal and (rubberized) plastic, which increases the weight but ensures excellent stability. The build quality is also flawless.

Thanks to its promising OLED display (2560x1440 pixels), which outclasses TN and IPS panels, the test model priced at 2200 Euros (~$2597) achieves one of the best ratings overall. Contrast, viewing angles, color intensity, and response times are excellent. The glossy touch surface, which reflects heavily, is a small disadvantage.

Otherwise, we can only complain about the missing card reader, the not quite perfect maintenance and the high depth. At 26.9 cm (~10.6 in), the device appears at least like a 14-inch laptop. Nevertheless, the Alienware 13 R3 delivers a so far unrivaled performance in the 13-inch segment. The top model comes with a PCIe SSD, a Core i7-7700HQ, and a GeForce GTX 1060. The latter two are more common in 15-inch devices and larger. In case the performance might become too low at a future date, it can be improved with external solutions such as a Graphics Amplifier or Thunderbolt 3 (eGPU).

Note: According to several forum messages, the current Alienware generation frequently suffers from temperature problems. Our tests of the 15 R3 confirm this (high, inconsistent CPU values). Apparently, the cooling system is too weak and/or the quality or quantity of thermal grease is too low.

Gigabyte Aero 15X
Gigabyte Aero 15X

The wolf in sheep's clothing is a fitting summary for the Gigabyte Aero 15X (~2400 Euros/~$2827). While most gaming notebooks are pretty bulky or heavy and attract customers with a very playful design, Gigabyte's 15-inch model uses a slim, light and sturdy chassis with an understated design. Only the colorful RGB keyboard illumination is an indicator for the gaming orientation.

Inside the chassis is modern high-end hardware such as the Core i7-7700HQ and GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q, which create some noise under high workloads. The SKU with the GTX 1060 for 2100 Euros (~$2474) is a good choice if you want to save some bucks. Both models are equipped with a matte 1080p IPS screen, which lacks G-Sync in favor of battery runtimes (Nvidia Optimus), which is a good choice considering the mobility. The small bezels and the certification for X-Rite Pantone are other advantages.

MSI GS63VR 7RG
MSI GS63VR 7RG

MSI currently has three systems in this ranking. Besides the GE63VR 7RF and the GS73VR 7RF, the GS63VR 7RG can also secure a spot. Thanks to its low weight of 1.9 kg, the 15-inch system is very portable. The lack of Nvidia's G-Sync technology is a result of Optimus, which improves the battery runtime.

The GS63VR does not lack graphics performance, either. The GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q is dangerously close to the previous high-end chip GTX 980 and can handle all modern games with decent settings in the native 1080p resolution. The test model for 2300 Euros also includes 16 GB DDR4-RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, and a 2 TB HDD.

MSI GE63VR 7RF
MSI GE63VR 7RF

While MSI's GT series is designed for passionate gamers primary playing at their desks at home, the GE series has a bigger focus on the mobility. Let us take the 15-inch models, for example: Compared to the GT62VR 7RE, which is 4.0 cm (~1.6 in) high and tips the scale at 2.9 kg (~6.4 lb), the GE63VR 7RF is significantly slimmer (2.8 cm/~1.1 in)) and lighter (2.4 kg/~5.3 lb). Gaming enthusiasts will still appreciate the powerful components. The Core i7-7700HQ is supported by 16 GB of DDR4-RAM, an SSD/HDD combo as well as the GeForce GTX 1070, which can compete with the performance of the GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q.

MSI also deserves praise for the aluminum surfaces and the RGB keyboard illumination. Whether you appreciate the 120 Hz display depends on your personal preferences. The TN panel offers short response times, but the viewing angle stability is mediocre. The lack of G-Sync is a matter of taste as well. We prefer long battery runtimes for a mobile device, which is realized via Nvidia's Optimus on the GE63VR.

Asus ROG Zephyrus
Asus ROG Zephyrus

The ROG Zephyrus is certainly one of the most exciting gaming notebooks of recent years. Thanks to the brand-new Max-Q-design from Nvidia, Asus has been able to squeeze a GeForce GTX 1080 (GX501VI) or a GeForce GTX 1070 (GX501VS) into a 1.8 cm slim case, which remains quieter under load than we expected. However, the 15-inch model reaches quite high surface and component temperatures in 3D mode. Furthermore, the combination of slim chassis and excellent performance is at the expense of battery life, connectivity, and maintenance. Moreover, you will have to live with the unusual positioning of the input devices.

Plus points include the contrast-rich and viewing-angle-stable 120 Hz panel (G-Sync) and the stylish case made of high-end materials. It is debatable whether the bundle is worth the price tag of over 2000 Euros (~$2356). Comparably fast notebooks (without Max-Q design) are available for significantly less money.

Schenker XMG P407
Schenker XMG P407

Schenker Technologies has also made a mini-gaming device. With a display diagonal of only 35.6 cm (~14 in) and a height of 2.5 cm (~1 in), the XMG P407 is one of the smallest high-end notebooks. Despite its slim build, buyers do not have to forgo good performance. For example, the fourth-best Pascal GPU works inside the 13-inch chassis. In most cases, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is fast enough for 1920x1080 pixels and high details. The other components of the XMG P407 are also nothing to sneeze at. Apart from 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and an IPS panel, Schenker Technologies has incorporated a PCIe SSD from Samsung into the test model.

However, we did not like the battery runtimes (weak battery), the Turbo utilization and the lack of a Thunderbolt port that much. Advantages include the plain design, and the lit keyboard.

MSI GS73VR 7RG
MSI GS73VR 7RG

MSI has not changed the case compared to the GS73VR 6RF, but customers still get a good 17-inch notebook in 2017. The GS73VR 7RG is not only conveniently light (2.4 kg/~5.3 lb) for a gaming system, but is also surprisingly slim (2.0 cm/~0.8 in).

You still get powerful components. The GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q has no problems with the native resolution of the test model. The bright 120 Hz TN display has 1920x1080 pixels. We are not so convinced by the port layout and the system noise. A WLAN runtime of about 3 hours is not very good either considering the missing G-Sync support.

Acer Predator Triton 700
Acer Predator Triton 700

Acer's Predator Triton 700 is a direct rival to the Asus ROG Zephyrus. Although the overall scores and the slim-gaming design hardly differ, each model has its own advantages and disadvantages. While the Acer notebook has the edge in terms of case, keyboard (mechanical), ports, and the maintenance, Asus' notebook is equipped with a better touchpad as well as lower temperature and noise development.

The ROG Zephyrus is also cheaper; a similarly equipped Triton 700 currently retails for 600 Euros (~$708) more in Germany. But both models are expensive at 3500 and 2900 Euros (~$4122 and ~$3416), respectively. You have to decide for yourself whether the additional charge over the thicker GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 notebooks (which usually perform better due to the lack of Max-Q) is justified. The display is a 120 Hz panel based on the IPS technology with G-Sync.

Guru Fire KS
Guru Fire KS

You might want to take a look at the Guru Fire KS if you are searching for a compact, yet powerful 15-inch laptop. The fan control still requires some work, even after the BIOS update, but the Fire KS can otherwise keep up with products from larger manufacturers.

The laptop has a good keyboard (illuminated), an elegant metal finish, and a comparatively high number of ports. Then there is the decent IPS screen and pretty long battery runtimes. The maintainability is also good for a device with a height of just 1.9 cm (~0.75 in). This, combined with the low weight (2.2 kg/~4.8 lb), makes it easy to carry the Fire KS around. The Core i7-7700HQ and the GeForce GTX 1060 are powerful enough for modern games in 1080p. We were not so happy with the cooling solution, because it is reaching its limits under load. The sound, the build quality, and the Wi-Fi performance could also be better.

Eurocom Q5
Eurocom Q5

While the Barebone manufacturer Clevo had focused on bulky desktop replacements in the past, we are now seeing more and more slim gaming systems from the Taiwanese manufacturer. The best example right now is the 2.2 kg (~4.8 lb) P957HR, which is sold as Q5 from Eurocom. Inside the 18.6 mm (~0.73 in) slim chassis is a Core i7-7700HQ in combination with the GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q.

The display is a 15-inch UHD model without G-Sync support. The Eurocom Q5 supports Optimus in return, so the battery runtimes are decent. As with the other Clevo barebones, we have to criticize the mediocre fan control of the notebook, and neither the temperatures nor the clocks of the CPU and GPU were perfect either. All in all, the device still scored 83%.
