"Mobile gaming" - what sounded like a bad joke a few years ago has already become common practice; at least in the notebook range. Processors and graphics cards are getting smaller and more power efficient, which makes cooling easier. As a result, powerful components can be packed into slimmer and slimmer cases. Although 17-inch powerhouses still dominate (see our 17-inch gaming notebook charts), the 15-inch and smaller range is steadily growing; keyword: "slim gaming".

The following table shows an overview of the Top 10 gaming laptops reviewed by Notebookcheck in the previous 12 months that weight less than 3 kg (~6.6 lb) and are still available. If ratings are equal, the latest review is listed first.

Acer Aspire V17 Nitro BE
Acer Aspire V17 Nitro BE

Although our Acer VN7-793G test model (also called Aspire V17 Nitro) "only" features a GeForce GTX 1060 and a quad core processor without Hyper Threading (Core i5-7300HQ), the 17-inch device still takes the lead. Apart from a fair price performance ratio, its pros includes the stylish case and balanced components. Gamers should be satisfied with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and the SSD/HDD combination as well as the sophisticated interface layout including Thunderbolt.

With 1920x1080 pixels, the resolution of the WLED displays is appropriate for the performance of the graphic card. In addition, the V17 Nitro is very quiet and slim (2.5 cm) for a gaming notebook and delivers above-average battery life. There are hardly any points of criticism (though maintenance could have been easier). Thus, we can unconditionally recommend this laptop.

2nd

Alienware 13 R3
Alienware 13 R3

The third revision of the Alienware 13 differs from conventional gaming notebooks in several aspects. On the one hand, there are the extensive lighting (including touchpad), and the striking design, which may not appeal to everyone. On the other hand, the case quality is different in general. For example, the manufacturer uses a combination of metal and (rubberized) plastic, which on the one hand increases the weight, but, on the other hand, ensures excellent stability. The build quality is also flawless.

Thanks to its promising OLED display (2560x1440 pixels), which outclasses TN and IPS panels, the test model priced at 2200 Euros (~$2337) achieves one of the best ratings overall. Contrast, viewing angles, color intensity, and response time are excellent. The glossy touch surface, which reflects heavily, is a small disadvantage.

Otherwise, we can only complain about the missing card reader, the not quite perfect maintenance and the high depth. At 26.9 cm (~10.6 in), the device appears at least like a 14-inch laptop. Nevertheless, the Alienware 13 R3 delivers a so far unrivalled performance in the 13-inch segment. The top model comes with a PCIe SSD, a Core i7-7700HQ, and a GeForce GTX 1060. The latter two are more common in 15-inch devices and larger. In case the performance might still become too low at a future date, it can be improved with external solutions such as a Graphics Amplifier or Thunderbolt 3 (eGPU).

Note: According to several forum messages, the current Alienware generation frequently suffers from temperature problems. Our tests of the 15 R3 confirm this (high, inconsistent CPU values). Apparently, the cooling system is too weak and/or the quality or quantity of thermal grease is too low.

3rd

MSI GT62VR 7RE
MSI GT62VR 7RE

G-Sync support? Check. High-end DirectX 12 GPU? Check. Only one m.2 slot for modern SSDs? Check. USB 3.1 Type C without Thunderbolt? Check. The 15-inch counterpart of the GT72VR has inherited all the advantages and disadvantages of its larger sibling, including the excellent maintainability and the moderate emissions (temperature, system noise). In terms of size and weight, the GT62VR performs significantly better. For example, the 17-inch device is as high as 4.8 cm vs. 4.0 cm (~1.9 vs. 1.6 in) and weighs 3.9 kg vs. 2.9 kg (~8.6 vs. 6.4 lb).

The image quality of the Full HD IPS panel is not bad. The same is true of the keyboard, the touchpad and the connectivity. However, with a street price of 2100 Euros (~$2231) the test model shows that Pascal notebooks are very expensive.

Asus GL753VE
Asus GL753VE

Those who do not want to spend more than 1500 Euros on a gaming notebook and can accept small compromises in terms of 3D performance (maximum settings not possible on all games) might be happy with the Asus GL753VE. The 17-inch laptop is attractive with its Core i7-7700HQ CPU and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU. Data can be stored on the 512 GB NVMe SSD or the 1 TB HDD.

The display is nothing special: Full HD and IPS technology are standard nowadays. Most of the other aspects including system noise, battery life, and height are also typical for a gaming notebook. The GL753VE deserves praise for its relatively cool case temperatures and well-made input devices.

5th

Gigabyte Aero 14
Gigabyte Aero 14

Gaming laptops that can be easily transported are very trendy. Gigabyte carries the slim idea to extremes and presents a 14-inch model with GeForce GTX 1060 in the Aero 14. The latter would be a perfect fit for a Full HD display. However, Gigabyte has used a panel with 2560x1440 pixels in the test model (GTX 1070 would be more suitable), which performs quite well, thanks to IPS technology. In addition, the manufacturer has incorporated 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and an NVMe SSD with a capacity of 256 GB.

Further advantages include the very light and slim chassis with a weight of 1.9 kg (~4.2 lb) and a height of 2 cm (~0.8 in), and the excellent battery runtimes. Gigabyte could improve the emissions in 3D mode, the sound, and the connectivity. (no Thunderbolt 3).

6th

Schenker XMG P407
Schenker XMG P407

Schenker Technologies have also made a mini gaming device. With a display diagonal of only 35.6 cm (~14 in) and a height of 2.5 cm (~1 in), the XMG P407 is one of the smallest high-end notebooks. Despite its slim build, buyers do not have to forgo good performance. For example the fourth best Pascal GPU works inside the 13-inch chassis. In most cases, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is fast enough for 1920x1080 pixels and high details. The other components of the XMG P407 are also nothing to sneeze at. Apart from 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and an IPS panel, Schenker Technologies has incorporated a PCIe SSD from Samsung in the test model.

However, we did not like the battery runtimes (weak battery), the Turbo utilization and the lack of a Thunderbolt port that much. Advantages include the plain design, and the lit keyboard.

7th

Asus GL502VM
Asus GL502VM

Those who like compact devices and travel a lot had better stick with 15-inch or smaller devices. With a height of 2.4 cm (~0.9 in), the Asus GL502VM is very slim. Nevertheless, it still performs almost as well as its bulkier 17-inch rivals (e.g. the Asus G752VS). Currently, a Core i7-6700HQ and a GeForce GTX 1060 provide more than enough fps for FHD gaming.

In addition, our test model features 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, an m.2 SSD, and an IPS panel. However, the GL502VM gets quite hot and loud due to its small size. Connectivity, weight (2.5 kg/~5.5 lb), input devices and build quality are nothing to sneeze at in general.

8th

Razer Blade (2016)
Razer Blade (2016)

Razer's 14-inch gamer had some issues at the time of its launch. For example, the original revision of the Blade also suffered from CPU throttling to 800 MHz during normal 3D use (games, etc.), which in part, significantly reduces the performance. In the meanwhile, Razer has launched an EC update (link), which can be installed easily, and on the one hand solves the problem, but on the other, increased the fan noise (the FHD counterpart was directly tested with the new EC). In addition, Razer could improve key labelling and sound quality - even more so in view of the steep price.

Apart from this, the 14-inch laptop performs very well. The expensive QHD+ model with 3200x1800 pixels is the right choice for those who wish for a high resolution display. However, the display is glossy because of its touch functionality, which often leads to disturbing reflections. Gamers who like to travel should still give the Blade a chance. There is hardly any premium model that is so slim (1.8 cm/~0.7 in), light (1.96 kg/~4.3 lb) AND has such a high-end build quality.

9th

MSI GS63VR 7RF
MSI GS63VR 7RF

Currently, MSI has two devices in the mobile Gaming Top 10. Apart from the relatively bulky GT62VR 7RE, a model of the significantly more compact GS series made it into the list. Thanks to its low weight of 1.9 kg (~4.2 lb), the GS63VR 7RF is perfectly suitable for outings. Nvidia's G-Sync is not available as Optimus is implemented, which improves the battery runtimes.

Furthermore, the GS63VR does not lack 3D performance. The GeForce GTX 1060, which challenges the former leader, the GTX 980, is a good compromise of price and performance. However, the performance is often too low for the native UHD resolution. The DirectX-12 chip is rather designed for 1920x1080 than 3840x2160 pixels. In addition, the $2000 test model comes with 32 GB of DDR4-RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and a 2 TB HDD.

10th

Asus GL702VS
Asus GL702VS

The Asus GL702VS has almost the same strengths and weaknesses as its 15-inch GL502VS sibling. The stylish body is quite slim (3.0 cm/~1.2 in) and light (2.9 kg/~6.4 lb) for a 17-inch laptop. If you ignore the fact that an HDD is used as drive (other configurations come with an SSD), the performance does not need to hide behind the competition. The GeForce GTX 1070 is one of the most popular and successful gaming GPUs and sufficiently fast for (W) QHD. Speaking of the display: a matte 120 Hz panel with G-Sync support is used.

Note: Unlike the original from Asus, which features a silver lid, the test model from Xotic PC has a black lid with red patterns.
