The XMG Apex 17 is primarily an extremely fast RTX 5060 gaming laptop—but after calibration, its QHD display reveals surprisingly strong qualities for content creators. With full DCI-P3 coverage and very low DeltaE values, the panel achieves excellent color accuracy. This means the powerful 17-inch laptop could be appealing not only for gamers, but also for photo and video editing.

XMG Apex 17 combines gaming performance with content creator potential

We’ve already covered how the XMG Apex 17 (our review) is a powerful—albeit expensive—choice for gamers looking to extract maximum frame rates from the RTX 5060. We’ve also highlighted that the laptop runs noticeably quieter than many competitors in entertainment mode while still delivering competitive performance.

Strong performance, quiet operation when needed, and a clean, understated design? Combined with its premium price point (starting at 2.049 Euro on bestware), this starts to sound like it could double as a content creation machine. So how well does the display hold up?

QHD display with 240 Hz and DCI-P3 color gamut coverage

The Apex 17 features a matte QHD display with a resolution of 2,560 × 1,440 pixels. The 17.3-inch panel supports refresh rates of up to 240 Hz, and according to the manufacturer, it covers both the sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces. But what do our measurements show?

Brightness is fairly average at 325 nits, which isn’t particularly impressive. Color accuracy in its factory state also leaves room for improvement, with average DeltaE deviations of 3.16 in grayscale and 4.35 in the ColorChecker test—values that are too high for serious photo or video editing work.

Calibration significantly improves color accuracy (DeltaE below 1)

However, the display has much more potential, as our manual calibration results clearly demonstrate. After calibration, DeltaE values drop dramatically to just 0.62 in grayscale and 0.81 in the ColorChecker test. This brings deviations below 1—a very strong result. We were also able to confirm full coverage of the DCI-P3 color space.

Suitable for content creators? Strengths and limitations at a glance

The display does not use PWM for brightness control, and backlight bleeding is barely noticeable, even in dark scenes. The only drawback is a somewhat elevated black level, which slightly reduces overall contrast.

That said, despite its only average brightness, the XMG Apex 17 could still be a compelling option for content creators. Its full DCI-P3 coverage, exceptionally low color and grayscale deviations after calibration, clean design, high performance, and quiet operation when needed all contribute to making it a surprisingly capable choice beyond gaming.
