We recently reviewed the gaming laptop XMG Apex 16 Max. It is equipped with the fastest version of the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti as well as the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX, and the gaming performance is excellent. You have to sacrifice some features like Advanced Optimus or Wi-Fi 7, but this is not really an issue while gaming and the resulting price is very fair. However, XMG also offers the Pro 16, a very similar device where the 5070 Ti is combined with the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX. It can be equipped with up to 128 GB RAM (AMD only 96 GB) and it supports Thunderbolt 5, but the Pro 16 is also around €100 more expensive. So which model is better for gaming?

* ... smaller is better
The Intel processor (150/135 Watts) can consume slightly more power than its AMD counterpart (135/130 Watts), but the Ryzen 9 9955HX is still slightly faster in our CPU benchmarks. The Ryzen model also has a slight advantage in our gaming tests, but the difference is not huge and the Apex 16 Max used a newer driver version, which can also have a positive effect on the gaming performance.

The verdict is therefore pretty clear, if you are only concerned about the performance, the Apex 16 Max with the AMD processor is slightly ahead and even a bit less expensive. Both devices are available with the same IPS or Mini-LED screen, so the Pro 16 with the Intel CPU only makes sense if you need 128 GB RAM and/or Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.
