Apple Watch users are gaining new route planning and navigation tools via two apps. These have arrived in an update for the Strava Apple Watch app and a new komoot app for the smartwatch.
Strava is rolling out a new route feature for Apple Watch users. It allows you to view maps directly on the watch during activities like running, cycling and hiking. The tool was initially spotted by users on Reddit and has since been officially announced by the brand. The Strava route feature presents users with a list of preset routes for their chosen activity, with a guiding line then overlaid on a GPS map. The suggested routes are based on data gathered from Strava users. Plus, subscribers get support for offline maps, as well as hands-free route guidance.
The new version of the Komoot Apple Watch app brings similar features. Users can now access offline routes, including turn-by-turn navigation. In contrast to the equivalent Strava functionality, this is available to all customers and does not require a Premium subscription. Another new tool is the ability to explore map details, zooming in to see streets, paths or trails up close using the digital crown. On top of this, you can now record activities directly from the watch, with metrics like distance travelled and distance to destination displayed on the wearable.
The latest version of the Strava app for Apple Watch (Series 11 46mm GPS curr. from $407.47 at Amazon) can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. Komoot fans can also download the new version of the brand’s Apple Watch app from the App Store.
