Asus has just announced its ROG Cetra True Wireless Speednova gaming earbuds – an update to the older ROG Cetra True Wireless. The new earphones introduce Speednova low-latency tech using 2.4 GHz (via wireless receiver) and Bluetooth connectivity, 24-bit hi-res audio, bone conduction microphones and adaptive noise cancellation. The design remains largely unchanged, but battery life has increased significantly.

Asus has just launched the ROG Cetra True Wireless Speednova, a significant update to its Cetra True Wireless gaming earphones that adds quite a few new features. Chief among those is the use of 2.4 GHz connectivity (aka Speednova wireless technology) in addition to the standard Bluetooth. Speednova, which uses a USB-C wireless receiver, gives the earphones ultra low-latency for gaming.

The higher bandwidth of the 2.4 GHz connection also enables support for hi-res audio – specifically 24-bit 96 kHz using the LC3+ codec. Built-in Dirac Opteo technology uses DSP to enhance and optimise the sound quality. Unlike Bluetooth multipoint found in most newer headphones, the Cetra Speednova features ‘hybrid multipoint’, i.e. with one device connected via Bluetooth and the other via 2.4 GHz wireless.

Also new is adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC), which optimises ANC performance based on the shape of the individual’s ear canal and how loose or snug the in-ear fit is. By detecting these factors 1000 times per second, it can reduce external noise by 31 dB even with a loose fit, as against just 25 dB with standard ANC. Adaptive ANC’s ‘Auto Mode’ also balances noise reduction with ambient awareness in different scenarios, with its three settings – Street, Commuting and Home.

Another key feature is the addition of bone conduction microphones to complement the existing air conduction mics. Bone conduction mics effectively isolate the wearer’s voice from ambient noise and, at least in theory, should prove very useful for gaming and calls in noisy environments.

While the previous Cetra earphones had a maximum battery life of 27 hours (5.5 from the earphones + 21.5 in the case, ANC off), the Cetra Speednova increases that to 46 hours with Bluetooth, and 36 hours with 2.4 GHz. On the design front, the earphones feature customisable ASUS Aura RGB lighting, and come in black and white colourways. Wireless charging and IPX4 rating for water resistance remain unchanged.

The ROG Cetra True Wireless Speednova will be available in late Q1, 2024, although Asus has yet to reveal the launch price (the original version was launched at $99 and is currently available for $75 on Amazon). While this new iteration undoubtedly represents a massive upgrade in features and functionality, the Cetra Speednova does face competition from the likes of Sony’s Pulse Explore earbudsRazer’s Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed and Hammerhead HyperSpeed for Xbox and Playstation, and Logitech’s G FITS with custom moulded fitting.
