CES 2024 | MSI Claw: New gaming handheld disruptor arrives with Intel Meteor Lake processor, 120 Hz display and a huge battery
Another well-known manufacturer has stepped into the gaming handheld space. In summary, 2023 saw the arrival of ASUS and Lenovo with the ROG Ally and Legion Go, respectively. This year, MSI has unveiled the Claw, a gaming handheld that it teased shortly before its CES 2024 reveal.
On the face of it, the MSI Claw looks a lot like other gaming handhelds, particularly the ASUS ROG Ally. However, MSI has partnered with Intel for its first gaming handheld rather than AMD, unlike almost all its competitors. Specifically, the MSI Claw relies upon the Meteor Lake platform, a 7 nm architecture that features significantly more powerful iGPUs than Raptor Lake or other recent Intel architectures.
According to MSI's press release, the Claw will be available with up to the Core Ultra 7 155H, a 28 W part that contains six performance cores, eight efficient cores and two low power efficient cores, as well as an iGPU that integrates 128 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 2.25 GHz. Although MSI has not published any gaming benchmarks yet, we have already seen the Core Ultra 7 155H and its iGPU outperforming the Ryzen 7 7840U and Radeon 780M in triple-A titles.
Moreover, the MSI Claw has a 7-inch 'IPS-level' display with a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate and 500 nits peak brightness. Furthermore, the gaming handheld has a 53 Wh battery (6-cell), which contributes to a 675 g weight and 294 x 117 x 21.2 mm dimensions. Unfortunately, MSI has not outlined a release date or pricing yet.
