The MSI Vector 17 and 16 HX are high-end gaming laptops that can be configured with up to an Intel Core i9-14900HX CPU, an RTX 4090 laptop GPU, and a UHD+ display. Additionally, both laptops rock features such as per-key RGB-backlit keyboards from SteelSeries, support for PCIe Gen 5 storage, MSI Overboost Ultra technology, and Wi-Fi 7, to name a few.

MSI has revealed the new Vector 17 HX and Vector 16 HX gaming laptops at CES 2024 with top-of-the-line internals, high-resolution displays, and PCIe Gen 5 storage. Aside from packing different screen sizes, both largely share external and internal hardware.

Starting with the internals, both the Vector 17 HX and 16 HX can be configured with up to an Intel Core i9-14900HX CPU with a 5.6 GHz all P-core boost clock. Complementing the top-end CPU, the machines support an RTX 4090 laptop GPU on the highest-end configuration. Other GPU options include an RTX 4060 on the entry-level SKU, an RTX 4070, and an RTX 4080.

Per MSI, the CPU and GPU on the Vector 17 HX SKUs with an RTX 4080/RTX 4090 get 250 W combined max power thanks to MSI Overboost Ultra. However, the power budget is limited to only 215 W for lower-end variants. Similarly, the top Vector 16 HX configs enjoy a 240 W power budget for the CPU and GPU while the entry-level and mid-tier variants make do with 195 W.

Moreover, the MSI Vector 17 HX and Vector 16 HX boast two DDR5 RAM slots for up to 64 GB of memory alongside support for two M.2 slots for a maximum of 2 TB storage. Interestingly, one of the M.2 slots supports PCIe Gen 5 drives.

Display-wise, the Vector 17 HX and Vector 16 HX can accommodate up to a 17 and a 16-inch 120 Hz UHD+ display panel respectively. Aside from the UHD+ display, MSI also offers a 240 Hz QHD+ IPS screen with 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut and a 165 Hz FHD+ screen.

When it comes to ports, both machines pack a healthy selection which includes one Thunderbolt 4, two Type-C ports with DisplayPort (one with Power Delivery), two Type-A ports, a single HDMI 2.1 output, a 3.5 mm combo jack, an SD card reader, an RJ45 jack, and one Kensington Lock port. Wireless connectivity is handled by Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

According to MSI, the Vector 17 HX with a Core i9-14900HX, an RTX 4070 laptop GPU with 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage, and a 240 Hz QHD+ display has an MSRP of $2,299. The Vector 16 HX with the same configuration will retail for $2,199.
