Suunto touts its latest product as the ideal audio accessories to take along on one's next adventure holiday, mountain hike or training session. The Wing headphones have an open-ear design for environmental awareness, and even support Head Movement controls for completely hands-free use. They may also be able to help keep both themselves and their user safe with LED lighting and an IP67 rating.

Suunto claims to make the perfect smartwatches for rugged pursuits - now, the brand of Finnish origin asserts that its fresh foray into "headphones" results in the perfect audio wearables to go with one's 9 Peak Pro or Vertical

The Wing peripherals are, of course, open-ear headphones that actually go on the sides of the head next to the ears rather than in or on them thanks to bone conduction technology. They are clamped (albeit "securely and comfortably") in place via a connecting wire made of titanium overlaid by silicone.

Accordingly, Suunto dispenses with all mention of noise cancellation for its 20-20,000Hz audio with respect to the new Wing - however, they might gain an edge in their market with a Qualcomm chipset that confers aptX Adaptive (and SBC) on the new headset, not to mention cVc for potential clarity while taking calls. Then again, they stream using Bluetooth 5.2 rather than 5.3.

The Wing is also touted to let the user bring wireless audio anywhere with advanced IP67 water- and dust-resistance - although the Shokz OpenSwim Pro might win that fight with IP68. Then again, Suunto has thoughtfully equipped its contender with LED accents in cases of loss or accidents.

The headphones can be configured to be even more visible by choosing their Lava Red colorway over the Black alternative. Either variant has a charging stand rather than a case, estimated to confer up to 20 hours of use before needing to be plugged in - however, it also acts as a power bank, thus potentially rationalizing any extra effort in carrying it around.

The Suunto Wing is available from now via channels such as Amazon, starting at $199.
