The Finnish smartwatch manufacturer Suunto has announced a new version of the Suunto 5, the Suunto 5 Peak. The new model is cheaper, lighter and smaller than the original version. The extensive GPS features of the Suunto 5 remain though, despite the price cut, plus over 80 sports modes.

Suunto has revealed the Suunto 5 Peak, a new version of the Suunto 5. According to Suunto, its new smartwatch has a 43 mm case size and is only 12.9 mm thick. The Suunto 5 Peak also weighs 39 g, 41% less than the original Suunto 5. A part of the weight reduction lies in Suunto's decision to switch to a plastic display cover; the Suunto 5 relied on mineral glass instead.

Still, the Suunto 5 Peak has a 1.1-inch display that resolves at 218 x 218 pixels. Suunto has pre-installed more than 80 sports modes too, plus a heart rate sensor. However, the ECG and SpO2 capabilities of the Suunto 5 are gone. Incidentally, the Suunto 5 Peak connects to devices over Bluetooth. Suunto continues to restrict some smartphone features to Android though, such as the ability to send predefined replies to incoming messages from the smartwatch.

The Suunto 5 Peak offers water resistance up to 30 metres as well, plus GPS navigation, and up to 10 days of battery life. Suunto is accepting pre-orders now and will begin shipping the smartwatch on February 1. Currently, Suunto sells the Suunto 5 Peak in six colours:

  • Black
  • Cave Green
  • Dark Heather
  • Ochre
  • Ridge Sand
  • Ridge Sand Multicolour
